@murch..i attended the conference held at Lyco Regency 3/4 weeks ago.
Ndemo stated that the Chinese had approached Konza but their request denied so they boughtneigbouring land and are in the process of developing something major. He said the prefered the World bank/Western countries since they worked as a team with many countries involved unlike the Chinese.

AAK also asked why no local architects. Ndemo said it was coz of cost. AAK Sec Gen said that local architects were willing to participate pro bono. He agreed to have 2[man& woman] included in Konza team pro bono.

Craft Silicon one of the biggest software companies in Kenya is relocating to Singapore after what the CEO and founder termed as harsh & unfavorable operating environment.

Quote:
“The cost of doing business in Kenya is not favourable to the software industry, taxes are way above the small technology companies,” Budhabhatti said. “We have settled on Singapore for their better incentives that are pro-software developers.”

Reminds me of Syokimau....pipedream! The more we waste time on pipedreams the more vision 2030 becomes vision 2033...and moving. We have missed the economic milestones in 2009 - 2012 we should be hitting to be oncourse for vision 2030. Let's hope after we break ground we will now get closer to 10% growth. I believe we are a country of jokers! Why do I think this should have been an agric city?

Distribution systems in Kenya - If online shopping is to work in Kenya and deliveries,I see boda bodas being very important. They're all over. When someone comes up with a system that can coordinate boda bodas to deliver things,s/he will be rich. Everyone wins. You get deliveries, they get money, fewer physical businesses.

Damn is this for real?Any Craft Silicon insider?Though not perfect, I think this was one of the best software firms in Kenya. It is sad that such a company can relocate due to unfavorable operating environment while we are talking about Konza.

I agree. On the one hand such a big software company leaving Kenya might mean its market share might be broken up and eaten by smaller institutions. My bet on IT is simple,we're investing heavily into it.Movements will be made for this investment to start yielding returns.

@ChessMaster--Solar to power an entire city you are dreaming.
Tech equipments which includes servers consume alot of power so don't expect solar to power them.
Solar power in Kenya is mostly for domestic use.

Green is mean. Its breaking all the rules. I assure you, some investor somewhere is thinking of how s/he is going to milk solar from Konza. As you say, they consume a lot of power.

'The IT revolution must be green'. I find this thought most intriguing. But then it's all too clear!

Yes, IT is smelling of lots of goodies, but I doubt constructing a technocity like Konza is the way to go.

Why? Because no one knows how IT will mutate. For example, we shouldn't want to replicate the silicon valley because of time, and condition differences.

But then Konza can still be very useful.
