Thanks for the welcome and cheers for the compliment. I have a lot of info so feel free to drop me a line - I'd be glad to help. Check out ebay, run one of those searches that send you an email alert. Interesting stuff always comes up. There's a 5 Florin note currently up for grabs - quite a rare piece. Would be interesting to see how much it will fetch.

All the best.

Thanks K22. I have the Kenyan notes you have offered. Below is the list of notes that I would be interested in, but have to be in mint condition (UNC i.e. not folded, clean & crisp):

5 Shillings (Date: 01-Jul-1972)
5 Shillings (Date: 01-Jul-1976)

10 Shillings (Date: 01-Jul-1972)
10 Shillings (Date: 01-Jul-1974)

20 Shillings (Date: 01-Jul-1974)

100 Shillings (Date: 14-Sep-1986)
100 Shillings (Date: 01-Jul-1977)

Best Regards.

History.... just like postage stamps.... by the way, the latter must have ballooned in value now that few people post letters and few postal corps print stamps any more...

Absolutely right @chiaroscuro. Also, banknotes can serve as an investment vehicle, though very illiquid of course. Personally, they are a good way to concentrate wealth as banknotes appreciate in value and supply of quality historic notes will always be limited. There is plenty of exciting history; for instance, it will be noted sometime in the future that there was a gap in banknotes issued after 2010. The most current banknotes in Kenya today are dated 16th July 2010... We can thank Banki Kuu and De La Rue for that 2-year lapse.

There is tons of information in our country's banknotes; it's just that we use them as a currency and rarely appreciate them as a form of art. From my earlier note you will see the associated "value". An uncirculated 1988 500/= note today is worth over $200. The challenge is in finding one in that condition.

Anyone with mint Kenyan gold commemorative coins? Let's talk.

Regards.

I would recommend the following (they have to be in mint UNC condition):

- 1966 50 shillings (present value >KES 100,000)
- 1994 1,000 shillings (~KES 8,500)
- 1987 & 1988 200 shillings (~KES 15,000)
- 1988 500 shillings (~KES 15,000)
- 1996 20 shillings and 50 shillings notes

There's nothing between 1966 and 1994? Why is that?
Would you know the value for those EA coins with a hole in the middle?
Thanks.

BBI will solve it

I also have 2 moi ten shilling notes crisp and one 20 moi blue note. I have the purple 100 shillings note as well a bit used

I know they are being bought in Eastleigh, but have no idea who I'd buying them. the coins have a high content of silver. The value of their silver is higher than their denomination.

Hi Kenmac. Kindly share details of the uniqueness of the 1984 10 shillings note. Is it missing serial numbers and signatures? What is it's present condition? I would be interested based on the above.

Hi 2012,
Sorry I missed your post. There's tons of noted between 1966 and 1994. I was highlighting the individual notes I would recommend to someone who was not keen on getting the entire collection of Kenyan notes. Concentrate on acquiring multiples of these in mint condition (if you can).

Some recent Kenyan notes are surprisingly difficult to obtain. Try locating a 1997 or even a 2008 1,000 shillings note in mint condition. The ones I highlighted earlier in my shortlist are special and, will increase in value substantially in the coming years - from a collectors' point of view.

Regards and best of luck!

Folks,

Check out this catalogue for the Spink Auction on World Banknotes coming up in April. Of particular note should be the East African Currency Board notes (p87 - amazing 20 Florin note) and the Kenyan banknotes on p180. Just to give you the investment potential of collecting banknotes. The link may take some time.
