I know that only a few bloggers make money Worldwide. What are the prospects in Kenya?

Are you a blogger? How do you sell ads? What are the rates? How regularly do you need to update before attracting enough traffic to tour blog? What topics are interesting to Kenyans? Any avenues for networking?

To make money from blogging you don't necessarily need a lot of traffic. You simply need a blog (domain) with a high page rank (PR) to start getting paid. A page rank is a measure of worth of your site that is owned and operated by Google.

I tried this out myself from 2008 to 2010 by buying an already established domain PR +5 for approx $200. I made well over $10,000 from this domain alone. However, Google eventually caught up with me (Google does not allow adverts for cash from competitors) and stripped my PR down to 0.

However, majority of online companies that use traffic as a determinant calculate compensation based on pay per click or pay-per-view. This works well especially for Google Adsense which can generate a steady flow of income.

For a site like Wazua, Google Adsense works well because of the number of site visits in day. I bet the Wazua admin smiles all the way to the bank on a daily basis!!

Don't wish to rain on this blogging parade but had to make a correction. PR has never determined earning power. Kenyan adsense will not earn you more than 20cts a click. Most earn below 0.10 so lets do the math. To make $100 you need 1000 clicks at a minimum. At 2% conversion which is exceptional, go do the math on when you'll be able to pay a mortgage if you are doing adsense in Kenya.

Dealing with Internet, think globally. Target global readers unless ur the gvt and want to increase the local content volume.

@ Sizzla. Interesting to know that you could earn $ 10,000 without minding about traffic. What if I do not purchase an existing domain? What are the chances of using SEO techniques to raise the site ranking?

@ Alma. According to you, if I'm not wrong, Google ad-sense cannot earn enough money for a newcomer. Well, how about selling ads space after the blog is established. Can this work? I guess I read somewhere that you own a domain. Kindly, share some info on the challenges, the prospects, running costs and so forth.

@ Richdad. Good idea. The problem is that for most topics, there are established sites which rank highly on Google. The result is that a new site will not appear within the first pages, so most internet users will not even visit the site.

@innovateguy adsense is not for the Kenyan blogger. But yes selling adspace is the way to go. But that comes with issues about getting the advertisers.

As for me owning A domain, that is totally and categorically untrue. I don't own a domain at all.

The basic economics of the web in Kenya is that there is an oversupply of websites with very low demand from paying customers. Making money online with a Kenyan venture is tough!

One untapped area worth looking into though, is making a website targeted towards diasporans. On your end you'll have the local knowledge required to make it happen, and on the other side you'll have diasporan customers who are ready and willing to pay for what you're selling.

Interesting thoughts....What can you sell to the diaspora that they cannot get anywhere else?

Marketing can also be quite a challenge.

I suggest that you jump into the ring once you've done a cost and benefit analysis n there is a positive return however minimal. A journey of 1000 miles starts with 1 step.

Kenyan's relationship with the internet is just beginning. When a majority of Kenyans can access the internet comfortably from their houses and not from work or cybers, things will change. Don't wait till they do.
Uncertainty is certain.Let go
