Kenya bags top global ranking in tourism;
After the negative and sad events of last week in my country,I was looking for something to make me proud of this great nation in the papers and here it is...Kenya is the fourth best destination for meetings and conventions in Africa, according new rankings by the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA).According to the ICCA rankings, Kenya clinched position four in Africa after South Africa, Egypt and Morocco.

@pastor,
Crap..!!!......Spain is slightly smaller than Kenya and it does not have wildlife in natural habitats or other tourism activities anywhere near to Kenya.Even though earnings from tourism have soured to above 1B USD,we pale to Spain's annual earnings from tourism of 60B USD....or 2 million visitors a year for Kenya,compared to Spain's 21 million visitors a year......Kenya's tourism star is simply very very dim.

Njunge , I tend to agree with most of your arguments ....Just check thro Uhurus 2010/11Budget....there is no mention of Tourism sector ....Yet it is the leading forex earner.. talk of expecting milk from a cow without feeding it .....

@ Guka, you are not comparing like for like. It costs all of Gbp 200 for a flight to spain and 2 weeks accomodation with no visa requirements. For kenya that is less than what you have to pay for vaccinations and travel insurance.

@Kizee,
Thanks...That's just about....No need to go to Ibiza and you've not got the pixsmile

@Obi,
Make it cheaper(Not necessarily cheap),improve security and infrastructure,create more bed space,do away with travel visas.....Let's just be honest.There is alot we can do to double the number of visitors every year without straining.......and they will come flocking with bags full of dollars in tow.

last year i was in eastern europe...some countries which have known capitalism for all of 20 years...the tourism huko is at another level..the sites were just breathtaking....its the small things...if u shop in SA and other countries theres a counter at the airport wher u get a refund for taxes paid on purchases...so maybe GOk shud also luk at making kenya a competitive shopping destination....wildlife tourism or overreiance on the same is getting tired...u shud see how much money nigerians drop at sandton mall...trickle up and down economics

@Guka and Kizee

I do understand where you are coming from. There is still alot to be done, but seriously, isnt it something to be proud of to be put above the rest? Arent there so many behind us? It means at least something is being done. May be not enough but we are on track..... Your daughter cant come home after scoring 390 up from 250 marks out of 500 and you keep bashing her that she should have gotten 500.... true, she could get any other figure above 390, but wouldnt you pat their back and tell them they are on track... and there is still room for improvement? We really didnt expect Kenya to be top after where we are coming from... corruption, violence, drought etc... its good news.... lets for once say something positive for our country when it deserves praise....

@ Pastor M
That makes two of us!

@Wendz,
Maybe what i really mean is that i am not comfortable to be with the leading pack......i would rather we lead the pack and at this point,given the kind of resources we have,there is no reason why we should not.......That is why i find nothing to pride in unless you can convince me that a tourist in his/her right mind would find a country which is 7/8 desert and with no known wildlife or beaches more appealing than Kenya.

Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Kenya is one of Africa's most popular destinations with good reason. The Annual Migration of Wildebeest and Zebra in East Africa is one of nature's biggest spectacles. The best time to climb Mount Kenya is between January - February, and July - October. You can see elephant, hippo, cheetah, leopard and more.

And clean up Mombasa. The town is too dirty for a tourist town. As you head from Nyali bridge to north coast, those shanties and garbage dump to the right are an eyesore.
