Remind me again? why are we signing all these green things yet we contribute very little to the issues of this planet?

@masukuma, do you the darkest part of africa on that map the river Congo has the potential of generating more than 100,000 megawatts of power. Plans are underway by South Africa Eskom to develop 40,000 MW the world’s biggest hydropower complex bigger than china's three gorges hydropower complex.

Instead of kenya wasting money on a nuclear power plant wont it be much easier to chip in for such project. We truly need leaders who lead us to light

Pheeew, I've managed to read through all the posts and made two observations.

One,we have some wazuans who've been to school, their posts are laced with big words and terminologies, but they just can't think.

Two,that pic shows the level of lighting at night as a way of showing energy consumption levels. Well lit places consume more power than the rest.
Why do we have to go green? We don't have to choke ourselves just to feel we've had our share or equal.
Pollution everywhere is bad, doing it ourselves doesn't make it any good.
As much as we can reduce on the greenhouse emissions, let's do it.

AS MUCH AS WE CAN!

Surely you don't expect bright lights to be shining in the Sahara desert that covers much of northern Africa or the Namib desert in the south. Neither do you expect the Congo/Gabon/Angola/Cameroon/Magdagascar rainforests to be all lit up. Nor the savannas/nyikas in East Africa (eg. Maasai Mara, Tsavo), Okavango, horn of Africa etc. Even the Brazilian amazon is dark in that photo, same with Australia's desert/outback, Russia's siberia, the Himalayas, Mongolian and Argentinian vast grasslands etc. There's thus nothing wrong with Africa being dark.

And also unlike Africa & Australia, most parts of Europe, US, Asia have good climate that has enabled nearly uniform distribution of populations on their land and thus the even lighting in those countries, not to mention hundreds and even thousands of localised human settlements in some of those areas.

I agree with you in principle however what the images show is that we are kidding ourselves to think that what we contribute will make an impact to the global 'total'. Even if all of Africa had 0 emissions and the rest don't change we are wasting our time. Its actually the rest who need to beg us to reduce our emissions (future) not vice-versa since they have been burning their coal for ages - we have not started burning ours. We also need to remember that people build their countries for themselves not for others - Americans think of how each decision they make is going to affect Americans first and others later. Perhaps we should start having discussions on how to get some light in Congo, CAR, Mali and other places first before thinking of whether our actions have adverse effects on the ecosystem of Tahiti.

@masukuma, The keywords i used were,AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
We don't have to be burning tires every night, having those neglected trucks emitting the darkest of smoke on our roads. We can reduce our emission levels,no matter how small, without affecting our development process.
Some of the polluting we do,affects us directly through respiratory infections and contaminated underground water. These, we can act upon and they are so immediate to us,you can feel them.

indeed! I have worked in Afghanistan and when winter approaches those people burn plastics, tyres and animal dung to keep themselves warm.

@mkeiyd, you've done well to show me that I am one of the unthinking wazuans . . . at least I am learning much . . .

Now, does energy consumption necessarily translate to global warming? And how?

Is it true that if a place with lights at night must cause more global warming than a place that is dark at night?

@masukuma, I doubt whether we can talk about an 'us' versus 'them' approach in relation to global warming. This is because we enjoy and demand the benefits of culture and practices that lead to carbon emissions. And I do not think we are willing to drop this demand.

Again, by consuming the things we do, we make our contribution to global warming.

But I realize that a major reason for stalled action even from the developed states is that African nations are too small economically and politically, and too divided to have significant bargaining power.

African nations need a way to merge and increase their power, and need a culture shift that will boost research and development. In fact, we need to ask the developed countries to contribute more funds, personnel and infrastructure to turn our learning institutions into research centers as a means to meeting this environmental challenge.

We should also definitely try to cut down on emissions as pointed out by@mkeiyed.

What do you think?

@tycho, I don't rem mentioning names but hey,,,,,if you feel like choosing your side, who am i to stop you?!

Most of the energy in use worldwide is NOT green.
It would then follow that there is a very high likelihood of a well-lit place polluting more. Even though, that might not necessarily be the true.

I don't think I'd be better off knowing it was another person who was being referred to. We are all thinking and growing together.

I agree with your last paragraph.
