I am impressed by its performance and looking at its books,I think Am going to buy some from this counter. The bank has registered growth in its income streams and given the Bank used deposits to generate the income not forgetting investing in new softwares and branches,it's a wonder they made the profit in such a tight market. At least they represent the bonds haircut accurately unlike the rest who chose to do some gimmicks with their bond portfolios when the interest rates went to the sun...$15/barrel oil... The commodities lehman moment arrives as well as Sovereign debt volcano!

The bank registered a KES336mn Pretax loss in Q3 2012, this is a classic example of a bad company on a surgical table better off ignored!

It is not a pretax Loss...but a profit....the performance is not that Bad. Which bank are you talking about? NBK posted a KES 336m pre tax loss in Q3 compared to a KES 426m pre tax profit in Q2: Net Interest Income, down 5.6% q/q; Non Interest Income, down 14%; Total Operating Income down 9.1%q/q

Pretax Profit of 576,513,000/= (Sept2011 1,807,702,000/=) But when you look at interest income the company registered growth. 6,424,014,000/= (Sept 2011 4,786,861,000/=) Even non interest income grew marginally 2,053,507,000/= (sept 2011 1,772,156,000/=) apart from the high interest rate paid to depositors and increase in Opex due to new branches and upgrade of its banking software I still think this company produced good results given the environment it was operating in. @selah, the figures you have just posted are Year on Year (y/y) performance which are gloomy to say the least (PBT down 68.1% y/y). If you look at the Quarter on Quarter (q/q) performance, which is also very important and it’s what @the deal and I are talking about, you will get a gloomier picture.

... in addition, when gauging interest income, Net Interest Income (NII) is the best parameter to check. This is because when interest rate on loans hiked, so did the interest rate on deposits

@mwekez@ji I still insist the income streams have grown, the drop in profit (I still insist it's not a Loss) was mainly brought about by Other Operating expenses which can mainly be attributed to new branches and the IT upgrades. If we had the Cashflow statement we could have seen how they made and spent their cash. @selah
On income streams, I still don’t get how you are looking at them because Total Operating Income is down 9.1% q/q and down 3.7% y/y.
On Profit/Loss before tax, we are basically reading the same page as follows: Q3; -335,262,000 (loss) Q2; 425,602,000 (profit) Q1; 486,173,000 (profit)
Q3+Q2+Q1 = -335,262,000+425,602,000+486,173,000 = 576,513,000 (profit)
On other operating expenses, I wonder what portion of that is non-recurring
