Wazuans,

Please advise.

I was thinking of taking my baby girl who is turning 3 in April 2013 to baby class in January.
However, on consultation with her grandmother(on her dad's side) who is very experienced with children, she advised me to put it off for a while as she is still too young, reasons being:

1. She will come to dislike school earlier on which will have a negative effect on her performance in later years.

2. Her mind is not mature enough to hold onto information i.e. one day she may be able to recite the alphabet and the following day, she will be unable to do so therefore leading to frustration.

What is your take on this? Anyone willing to offer their advise.

Points to note:
1.she is quite tall(big) for her age.
2. I think it would be good for her to start interacting with other kids as the neighbourhood in which we live at the moment has very few kids therefore she talks to birds, insects etc.

Don't have much clue on this. Shall cross that bridge around November 2013 like you are doing now. On the second point raised by your grandmother, my opinion is that at that age learning is not really the focus of the school so there would be no pressure for your girl to hold onto information.

Washana na grandmother and take the mapozilet to playing class. things have changed since those days of going to school based on whether you could touch; i dont know what.

Nowadays, children go to school at age 2.5 years

My baby girl & yours are of the same age.i have also struggled with the same question for a long time. But it all depends on the circustances. If she is in a good environment with no Househelp headache then let her stay at home. But if not she is betteroff in an instituition than be introduced to wickedness/nonestop TV screen at a tender age.

But if you decide to take her to school, make sure its a good one where teachers knows what they are doing instead of trying to please you through child's performance ending up giving her more than she can chew coz she will definately hate school. At that age they need to learn at their own spead.Thats my opinion and wish you the best

At what age do you want her to be in class one? Use that as a yard stick considering she will be in pre primary for 3 years if in an urban area. If in a rural area baby will be in pre school for 1 year. Look out for a good school where she learns through play.
Lord, thank you!

I think 4 - 5 yrs is the right time to introduce formal learning. Before that, learning should be experiential- through play. Unfortunately, many of our so called kindergatens are just formal schools and this sucks. Also, Kenya has no system that supports play groups where kids 5yrs and below meet with other kids in the estate and just play under supervision while their mums or carers catch up on vybe. We grabbed all the plots that would have become estate parks and now we are suffering for it.

A child that age should just do small things like singing, playing, naptime....and it shouldn't be for long probably three of four hours a day. Don't do it just because other people have done it. Whatever she'll learn at that age is probably something she can get at home but as someone has said it all depends on the environment and the people around her. If you have to then a day care probably close to home would be appropriate IMO.

I have always wondered what kids go to school to do at 2.5 years or even 3. And as someone has pointed out, kids should play....that is the main occupation of children. I see kids just being introduced to formal learning at such an early age,and then they have to be on top of the class because they are given exams, then after that, they start cramming and going for tuition on holidays and the cycle continues.@ mapozi, why do you want your kid to recite anything now :(

Or am I missing a point here?

it all depends on individual circumstances. I have a daughter who is turning 3 in January and cannot wait for her to join baby class. I always pity her when I come home early and find her bored to death having played with her toys, watched TV,slept a few hours etc and itching for something new to do. There are very few kids in the estate during term days and the only company she has are mboches.
Baby schools are very instrumental in honing their social skills early on in life. I believe she has more to gain going to school than bumming in the house all day.

There is a widespread problem in Kenya, somehow parents want their kids to learn so much that they're willing to put their kids to school as early as 3. 5yrs is the right age to start school, I know in US kids are not allowed in school until they are 5yrs old.

My kids went to school at 3.5-4yrs. At 4th birthday they were already in pre-school from 0800-1200. The first year they did painting and learning to sing and socializing stuff.
In second year (5 yrs) they learned how to hold a pen and drawing, painting, learning how to swim and most importantly to follow the line.
At age 6 they joined the classic schooling program.

The day she will be able to successfully use a pit latrine.

At least that is how I was measured and I never attended those those numerous baby schools, nursery, never repeated any class, pass-over class 3, never had a running nose, never wore a sweater, was position one entire my schooling life, never niniod at form 2smile ,never tarmacked, never got bullied, never said "me my mother/dad..." while storying, never fought a girlApplause ,never arrogant, never ate ceralac...

I joined class one quite mature and straight thinking.

Well said, but it would be important to consider all children may not follow the same equation. Times ve changed too not to mention the school system. You may not want to chance with the kid's education, ask yourselve how many children underwent a similar system and languishing in the village? and what is the probability?

Famooz, its not that I want her to learn math etc right now, its just that there are no kids for her to interact with in the neighbour hood therefore I would want her to be around other kids to develop some skills e.g. social and I wouldn't mind her singing and stuff like that but I really don't want to stress her with formal education. Would it be possible for me to take her to play group then skip baby class and go to nursery. Anyone with experience out there?

I think most parents ar taking their school at an early age coz of also keeping up with the "Jones syndrome"wheere you think my kid might look/be backward if i don't take them to school early like my neighbour did.
I mean i have a rela who's taking her kids to "play-group" and they are not yet even 2!! ati it wil help them talk faster....watcha mtoto ake nyumbani!

most nursery has entry requirements, if your kid does not meet that then they are started at baby class - this is to ensure kids are at the same level.
just take her to school, if she likes it then let her go on, if she does not like it - then give her another year. My kid went to school at 2.5 and she loved it

but remember that most decent schools have very gruelling class one interview tests, that’s why most kindergartens start drilling the kids with what to expect in the class one interview test, most also don't want a bad reputation when it comes to class one success rate - trust me you don't want to have problems when your kid is ready for class one.

I advice that she goes after 4 years of age - atakua amejua kutumia choo -- otherwise it will be difficult for the baby and i dont think teachers will give attention akitaka kwenda haja .... i realized this and i decided to have two babies wakiwa wamufuatana ...... ili mmoja asiboweke .... worked good for us .... with fisrt born 4 years and second born 2 yrs; they are well knit and play together bila shida ---- hakuna kuboweka..
