@Hamburglar,

Oops!!...The way you demonise the beauty.Okay,you have the experience and i am not doubting.If the suspension starts croaking at 75K,then,it's a cardboard and so much unlike British engineering.Should i stick with the jeremans then?

@Luttz/Mwatha,
Thanks guys.

@Vky,
I have tried to calculate duty for a 3L petrol engine 2005 Jag but it's not as high as you put it.

got those figures from spreadsheets from the KRA website, however you should note that whatever you calculate using the KRA spreads is only tentative and only your agent can tell you the exact taxes to be paid once he puts in a n entry in the simba system take for instance I am in the process of clearing a ford focus from Uk when I calculated the payable tax I was getting 222k but when my agent put in an entry I ended up paying 230k

@ JK: You have been in this industry for long; how reliable (quality wise) are the UK cars? Been toying with an idea of Jeep (G Cherokee), X5, ML320 or Prado L5 invincible. I am not a Japanese person as such but the Prado's 8 seat capacity is tempting. Still searching within myself and will decide at the appropriate time next year (as I retire)

Cherokee, X5, ML, LC5... are all good ("in the eye of the beholder"). Depends on what you want to do with the car , where you will be using it etc...
The car that will hold its value best is that LC5. The prices of Land Cruisers - including the VX (as well as Hilux)in the UK are artificially high because of the export Market - RHD countries (... yes, especially Kenya!).
Despite that, those Toyotas would still be my best choice.... I just love cars that 'refuse' to de-value.
Somehow I find that the cars from UK look better than those from the East.... especially the finish....Hence in Kenya they will command better prices.

I don't buy the story that an import from Japan is in any way better... (gearbox/suspension/or anything mechanical)... than the same model vehicle from UK.

What I would buy is that a brand new locally (Kenya) sold one may have sturdier suspension.

Thanks JK! Yea the finishing and the extras on UK cars is superb and cannot be compared with Japanese sourced vehicles. I agree the L5 is fantastic; and being an off road guy, it would be appropriate. Apparently there is no much difference in pricing with Japan. Will see how to go about it when ready.

Cheers

apart from the small trucks and buses assembled locally, I thought even the local guys who sell new cars import them from the west and the east.

the Japanese have some "draconian" laws when it comes to maintaining a car - I think that’s why some prefer cars from there

@JK,

Some of the prices found in AutoTrader seem absolutely ridiculous.Old man is a fan of the S-Jagi-uwa and it's unbelieable that there are quite a good number at sub 5K pounds (Take a look at this one at less than 3K).....How much then would it take to land it here?....I feel like spoiling ma'self.smile

Mid-life crisis. Not to worry, I'm thinking of getting a Harley Davidson, complete with red head bandana and black leather jacket.

What I meant was that as much as they are imported, they are desgned specifically for the Kenyan market from the point of manufacture...

an example would be ....
If you buy a diesel Land Rover/Range Rover from CMC its fuel system can handle diesel with higher Sulphur content.... where as the one produced for UK market are designed to take a max of 300ppm (parts per million)of sulpur content...yet some stations in Kenya may have more than that... probably 500-800ppm. (although I think the standard in Kenya changed and is supposed to be <50ppm.)

I'm no expert in this so someone could correct me on this...
