Unless you have become too busy to manage your portfolio, dont look for a fund manager. The management cost will eat your returns big time yet they dont deliver much - My 2 cents

The only reason am thinking about a mutual fund is the monthly returns...the consistency...please advice on which has the most returns compared to its peers in kenya...I will not invest in it,but it is worth knowing.

If you are in Kenya, you can easily track their performance from the daily reports in the newspapers - on the same page as the NSE table.

Decide what kind of fund you want: money market or equity or both

Money market is good for low-risk high[er] returns...most are currently earning higher than the 90-day T-Bill.

Highest returns now are available from Amana, CIC, Madison...in that order. I know who's behind CIC and Madison but I ha no clue who is behind Amana....

Equity Funds are rather poor performers; you are better off managing your own stocks - if you concentrate on blue chips, you will easily out-do the fund managers!

@chiaroscuro, what are the returns of those money market funds after deducting fund management costs?

For instance, old mutual money market fund generated 11.7% p.a. return in Septemeber while their service fee was 3% p.a meaning net return was 8.7% p.a. link... and we still havent factored the hidden costs

it is a well documented fact that mutual funds underperform indexes by the percentage of their management cost.

I think it's always important to have some money stashed away earning low interest but at least your sure when you need it,it will not have diminished. I think MMF is good for your emergency fund.that cash you can fall back on if all other sources of income stall for whatever reason...

Kenyan proffessionals are becoming more and more finance survy.. Its easier to obtain cheap info and knowledge. investment is being demystified and less pple will seek expensive financial advise in future.I bet 80% of wazuans invest on their own.
