"France's richest man, Bernard Arnault, head of the LVMH luxury group, is suing the leftwing newspaper Libération for publicly insulting him.

Arnault launched a lawsuit on Monday after the paper carried a large photograph of the business tycoon with the headline "Casse-toi riche con!" (Get lost, rich jerk) on its front page..."

"EVERYONE ELSE in France seems to have complained about the tough budget unveiled last week by president François Hollande’s government. Now it’s the turn of the pigeons.

A fast-growing group of internet activists calling themselves “les pigeons” – the bird is also slang for a mug or a sucker – has created a stir with its campaign on behalf of small-business owners badly hit by Mr Hollande’s tax rises..."

World food prices rise, stay close to crisis levels... http://af.reuters.com/ar...s/idAFJOE89301120121004

Quote:
World food prices rose in September and are seen remaining close to levels reached during the 2008 food crisis, the United Nations' food agency said on Thursday, while cutting its forecast for global cereal output.

The worst drought in more than 50 years in the United States sent corn and soybean prices to record highs over the summer, and, coupled with drought in Russia and other Black Sea exporting countries, raised fears of a renewed crisis.

Grains prices have retreated in recent weeks due to rapid harvest progress and concerns about weak demand in a slowing global economy.

But the Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) price index, which measures monthly price changes for a food basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar, rose 1.4 percent to an average of 216 points in September after remaining stable at 213 points in August.

The rise reflected mainly higher dairy and meat prices, with more contained increases for cereals, it said.

Greeks not liking the austerity pills being served by Ze Germans... Still suffering from econ indigestion for wrong medication, but who cares about Le eurozone...

Quote:
Greece is stuck in a deep five-year recession spiral after round-upon-round of austerity measures, tax hikes, pay and pension cuts. At the same time, record unemployment already tops 24%, while more than one-in-two young Greeks aged 15-24 are without work and face ever gloomier prospects.

Oil rises above $113 on Syria-Turkey tension - http://reut.rs/R1Zz1u

Quote:
Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Monday the "worst-case scenarios" between his country and Syria were now playing out, fuelling concerns that the 18-month-old conflict in Syria may spread to other countries in the region.

"It's a political risk premium coming into the market now, not really supported by fundamental data," said Andy Sommer, oil market analyst with EGL in Switzerland.

"If you look at the demand side, prices should be a bit lower than they are currently. But the risk, or fear, that this Turkey-Syria conflict might spread further in the Arab world is increasing that risk premium."

S&P Downgrades Spain, Citing Region Backtracking on Bank - http://buswk.co/SMvjeD

Quote:
Spain’s debt rating was cut to one level above junk by Standard & Poor’s, which cited euro-region peers’ backtracking on a pledge to severe the link between the sovereign and its banks as it considers a second bailout.

The country was lowered two levels to BBB- from BBB+, New York-based S&P said in a statement yesterday. S&P assigned a negative outlook to the nation’s long-term rating and lowered the short-term sovereign level to A-3 from A-2.

The downgrade comes after Spain announced a fifth austerity package in less than a year and published details about stress tests of its banks. Creditworthiness concerns have grown since the government requested as much as 100 billion euros ($129 billion) in European Union aid in June to shore up its lenders and amid signals that the deficit target is in jeopardy.

Wrong Move To Tax Mobile Money Transfer Service - http://bit.ly/T5ZLlW

Quote:
I would also be looking at the monster that is the government of Kenya's recurrent expenditure and taking a knife to it. It is time for innovation because otherwise we are ending up where we are now, in a seriously sub optimal place.

Here I agree with Alykhan. It's time to rope in that bulging gok debt rather than squeeze out taxes from mobile money which is an awesome phenomenon that has goosed the KE GDP. At the moment the KE econ is on a slowdown and hitting the brakes on mobile money through this senseless tax is counterproductive. Those treasury technocrats need to be more creative and should avoid "skimming" the golden cow!

Sudan ratifies S.Sudan border deal to restart oil exports - http://bit.ly/R9HyA2

Quote:
The Addis Ababa agreement calls for the resumption of southern oil exports. The African Union and other mediators hope the countries' mutual dependence on crude exports will keep the peace and encourage them to push on for a fuller agreement.

Southern officials say it will take three to 12 months to get oil exports flowing again.
