Its the continuation of the story. He is older, its a different place, he is facing different challenges so of course its different but I would not say worse actually I felt better about it than about Angelas Ashes. Absolutely well written and even better when read by the author himself. I listened to them on audio read by McCourt himself. He is the best story teller in the world. Now am reading "Teacher Man" the third of the trilogy and am struggling a bit with the punctuation, I can't really reproduce McCourts voice in my head which is what made it so captivating to go through the the first two books so I may just have to get the audio book for this as well.
