I've had the priviledge to do the Zambezi bungee (plus two other activities) on two occassions:
- Several months before the reported mishap involving that Australian lady.
- A few months after the mishap.
It's one fabulous scenery down there - The victoria falls behind you, Zambia to the left and Zimbabwe to the right.
You stand on an ancient bridge that doubles as a train passage between the two nations with the Zambezi roaring away, some 111+ metres beneath your feet.
You get to choose from a set of 3 different activities: the slide, the bungee jump and the bridge swing.
With no visible sign of any organised rescue team in the vicinity of the river:
- The slide lets you partake in a low-adrenaline suspended crossing of the Zambezi from one bank to one end of the bridge.
- The bungee jump packs more adrenaline together with some element of surprise; you never know which way the bounces will twist you towards at the points of tension on the cord.
- The bridge swing accords you some fabulous 360 degrees view of the sorrounding in addition to the adrenaline.
All three activities would set you back some $120 (there was talk of hiking this in Q3 of this year).
There is also a local variant of the story about one dignitary doing themselves an injustice; only that the VIP in this case is quoted as some local chief.
It's an adventure I'd recommend over and over to anyone who gets the chance to indulge in.
