-Everything for baby must be brand new
-If baby coughs, you get a fever
-Monitor all baby's movement.Remember it's heartbeat plus when it stopped drooling.
-Change pamper when baby pees a drop asipate rashes
-Everything MUST be sterilised like crazy.Woe to the maid who fails to do this.
-Try hard to ensure baby is always smiling.Crying will make baby tired.
-Everything is bought at the supermarket. No cereals from mama mboga cz it could be contaminated.
-Attend all baby clinics and ensure baby is given ALL injections(some smh) till they are 2 years.

Second Borns
woi!!
- Mum discovers Toi market.
- Mum can check in at any low cost hospital, give birth and go.
-Baby wears clothes worn by the first baby or mtush.Hakuna cha mabrand new.Economy.
-If baby cries for no reason, you let her/him do so.It's all lung exercise.
-No time to monitor every lil thing. You meet baby running and rapping one day and wonder when it all happened. How did you miss it?
-Pamper must be properly/fully utilised. No they dont cause rashes
-You discover that soap and clean water is enough. You start comparing rural and healthy kids and yours.Sio lazima sterilisation.
- You become a regular at mama cereals. She sells unrefined cereals and that is good for baby's digestion.
-Miss baby clinics, check in at your convinience. After 6 months you have had enough! Some bacteria is good for health after all.
You will take baby to clinic only if there is sign of illness.

3rd born

This one, you discover you are pregnant with after 6 months. The rest is history.

And the choice of school - public primary schools out of question, Braeburn School and the likes becomes the choice. Parents start paying fees for a class one child at a rate of over Kshs 220,000 per year! Almost four times the best national school in the country (annual fees for year 7 and 8 totals kshs 414,300, note). Pray Pray Pray

Kama wanayo, no problem!! You will get many are living in their own houses already driving rage rovers and mercs even before offspring pops in. So what do they do with extra cash which is constantly flowing in? Take the kids to brookhouse (fee average200k per term Pray)
Problem comes in when a kawa middle class dude renting a house in kile is trying to keep up with the kawa dude who owns his own house in peponi drive and kids fee is probably being paid by the company he/she works in.

That is why the Kenyan middle class will always be in the rat race. Sometimes I just admire western societies. In a country like Britain (have lived there once), education is free, healthcare is free through the NHS. Mortgage rates are about 5%. Their average pay is about KES 270,000pm. A new car costs 50% what it does in Kenya. Thus the only thing a middle class person will 'worry'about is servicing the 5% mortgage. That is why even primary school teachers in the UK can afford holidays in Kenya....and get treated like gods at the 5 star hotels.

Seems the Kenyan middle class has to foot the bill for govt failures in provision of services. The world is unfair.

kenya has free primary school, very cheap (subsidized) or in some cases free (NHIF) healthcare in public hospitals, very cheap home ownership.
the thing is that the middle class in kenya is very selfish and they want to compete with the rich.

if the middle class started attending to the available public facilities am sure the conditions would improve

Why not consider mission hospitals? Kijabe, St. Mary's, Kikuyu Mission, Nazareth etc? A caeserian there costs 25k. Normal birth costs 10k. As a father, i'd say many people want to complicate the child birth issue. Why pay through the nose for a 1 day affair?

How much do this private doctors (gyna) charge if you use them?

Depends on the doc. One doc i know charges 100k - current charge. and he's a good doc. Based in UHMC with rights at NH.

mMy gyna also based at UHMC charged 85,000/= for twins and has direct lines with nairobi mostly agha khan and KN was able to book the thearter at his convinience.

Childbirth has always been the same since the days of Adam and Eve, and has never been easy and I respect women for that. Caeserians for many years were used as last resort medical interventions to save the mother and child. But nowadays it's more of a lifestyle thing. And a whole industry has grown from it.

Why would you go to a mission or public hospital and pay that 25k if your Insurance can foot the 200k bill in Aga khan or Nairobi Hospital? Ati attending public facilities will improve their conditions, how now? Kenyans make all sorts of sacrifices to make sure their kids get the best that life has to offer, i believe our parents did the same thing.....People have different priorities!

@jaggernaut...Cheap can also be expensive, you have no idea what women go through after the CS after they go to some of these hospitals. if it is CS I better go for an expensive hospital which I'm sure..just to be sure, I cannot gamble the life of someone. After all, how many thousands have you burnt in those so called investments. My advise is: if you can afford take your wife to the best hospital.

just out of curiosity, who has the numbers of the number of births that occur in kenya daily? out of these, how many are in these so called 'expensive' hospitals? Then compare the safety and mortality rates. My guess is hii maneno ya elective CS, 'expensive' hospital ni kujishasha tu, if you couldnt afford it ungezalia pumwani and be fine like all other kids, bora upeleke mtoto clinic and you get attention from qualified and experienced mid wives, nurses and docs. Otherwise kulipa 200k for popping!! na salo yangu ni 30k? Okiyal, Asi!!
