Good people..

If you fit your automatic car with a gear lock as a security measure,is there any chance that this modification can end up being a potential source of mechanical problems for the automatic transmission? Assuming you have taken due care and the installation is done by an experienced mechanic?

Your advice will be deeply appreciated.

Fitted mine at MPPS Msa Rd. I think its the most effective way of dis-abling the car's

movement unless the thugs have can put in 4 hours un-interupted man hours. Go for it.

Lyanne,

Thanks, but how about my question – Have you confirmed that the gear lock (I believe it’s manual / mechanical) cannot have any adverse effect on the automatic transmission in the long run?

@ BAAKS

It doesnt affect the transmission in any way. The pin is just designed to prevent shifting the gear from parking to drive.

I've had it for a while now and i havent had any problems so far. I know of institutions that have practically fitted all their cars with the gear lock.

@BAAK;

Gear locks restrict the movement of the gear lever. They are not attached to the gear box. Therefore they will not have any effect on the gear box, whether manual or auto transmission.

Nonetheless,I find all these anti-theft devices a complete waste of money!!!

My car has an alarm/immobiliser. After several years of use,the remote control broke off from the key so I keep it [the remote] in my pocket while driving.

Then One day thugs attacked me on the road; threw me out and drove off with the car. I was left on the road-side [thank God] but I never remembered to use the immobiliser as the thugs drove away!!!!

If you ask me,all these gadgets do not make you car any safer and they cost more than you will save in insurance costs [premiums and / or theft excesses].

And the gear lock is an ugly thing in the driver's cabin!!!!

@mukiha- i disagree- check your policy. mine states should the car be stolen, and there is a claim- without an approved 'safety device preapproved by insurance' the excess is 15% but 5% with.

a pin gear lock is neater and harder to crack than all the alarms of this world coz yu have to get a hammer/ welder !!!

The thing is there is no 100% security but different layers act as a deterrent.
