Doctors have a lot of sob stories to tell. So do makangas.

Mr.Doctor, we are in a third world country. We know as tax payers and citizens that our facilities are a sham. In fact, we would love to tell Anyang Nyongo to go home right now, today!

But Doctors in Kenya cannot pretend to be better than other Kenyans.

Going on strike does not hurt Anyang and ODM. It is hurting the young girl in Eldoret who lost her arm since you fools were marching in the streets. It is hurting the poor at Coast General Hospital who are sleeping on the corridors as you fools are marching in the streets.

You fools are hurting Kenyans and we won't be forgetting soon.

You are lucky that you have Gen. Kiguoya and Fake Pamba up there. If it were me, I'd be in India right now recruiting.

I promise you, if you ever hear Alma is running rest assured that I'd go to India, China, Sudan and El Salvador to hire ching chong speaking doctors to replace you.

This is what I think you have done.

You are like a maid who is left with small babies to take care of in the house. You go on strike coz your boss is paying peanuts. As you are marching in the streets, the baby dies.

Would I ever want you back in my house?

@Alma, you miss the point entirely! It's NOT about pay. Imagine watching a mother and child die simply because someone in some office in Nairobi will not ensure we have elec and gloves in the hospital's theatre nevermind the doc is also doubling up as the anaesthetist? Why? Why does the government wait for the mortality rate of a far flung district hospital to rise so that they can send a paedetrician? Why? Yet they have the guts to say they are away having treatment for cancer not justin a private hopital in Nbi but ABROAD!! Someone's conscience has been seared by greed!!!

@ Alma, I challenge you to pick a doctor who's worked in some rural government hospital and find out the conditions they work in. Then go and use some other governement hospital where docs are not on strike like every other wanjiku does, then come back and post!

@Dia and other doctors out there.

We are Kenyans. We know our hospitals are pathetic to say the least. We know part of the problem is the gov't wants to build Konza before they equip the hospitals.

We also know our cops live in horrific conditions. The nurses in worse conditions. The teachers in terrible conditions.

Have no fear, you don't have to educate us on that.

But you are the only people who's actions have contributed to the direct death of Kenyans.

You lost any moral authority with me when I saw some guys in an accident moaning in a hospital I recently visited and you guys just watched because you were on strike.

I'm sorry but there is nothing worse than a doctor in this country at the moment. You deserve Anyang Nyongo and I hope and pray that you are actually fired so you can go do other jobs.

Obviously being doctors who care for the poor is not one of the things you do well. And you want my tax shillings to pay for your education? You can't be serious.

Do you mean the guy who died or the girl who lost her hand as the doctor who wants me to pay his Masters degree is marching in the streets during the day and masquerading during the night in a private hospital and has a clinic in the afternoon?

Dia's point is that a doctor with no drugs to prescribe or equipment to use in discharging his duties is ineffectual. I agree.

We disagree because doctors are not made from drugs or equipment. They are supposed to give care.

If you have an issue with the drugs and equipment next time vote in a good gov't not your tribesmen.

If they can't do their job, they should quit. Not pretend they are on strike because of drugs. Kenya has never had enough drugs even before independence. Kenya has never had excellent hospitals ever.

But we used to have doctors. Now we have parasites.

Totally agree with @alma in this matter. So how long have they been ineffectual and what have they done about it?
Is the only way to deal with this situation to go on strike and let Kenyans die? So you refuse to treat Kenyans who end up dying because the government's inefficiency and neglect has led to and would continue leading to deaths?

We are not talking about teachers here whose strike would at most lead to inconvenience to students and parents and delay in the former's education. Here the strike leads to DEATH.

I mean have they even thought of suing the government to provide the equipment etc or even tried to seriously lobby it and mount a PR offensive instead? Have they thought about a controlled strike where they attend to the serious cases?

And all that assuming that the strike is genuinely about better facilities and working conditions. Let's not forget that there is money involved which they are quick to point is not the main motive.

An interesting read by one @Gikuhi;

Quote:
We want services and accountability with our taxes not sweets, our arrogant ministers waste money on things we don’t need and then tell us ” Hakuna pesa, you think taxes are for buying Peremendes for children ” the teachers were asking for 13Bn, the city council of Nairobi had just wasted a 5Bn loan which they have to offset with PUBLIC property built with tax payers money( 294 million went to unknown creditors, 50 million to equity bank as facilitation fees etc),Instead of refurbishing parliament and spending 250,000 on a mostly empty MP seat get me an Anesthetist or a lab in Kibwezi … what about the 1trillion that NSSF has just lost… That’s our money.Or the Airport project that just got 12Bn more expensive, in to which deal makers pocket is our money going… can’t we tighten this waste to pay instead for our essential services… Health Water Security Education…. It’s our money Or the x millions spent building the homeless Vice president a residence, or buying a whole office block opposite the president’s for the soon to be abolished office of the prime minister… how myopic and arrogant can our ministers get… That’s our money. Or when they sell a chunk or Forest land and get rich and then go round the country daring anyone to prove they stole and calling themselves self-made millionaires – that’s our money. Thats our money, pay our doctors,

Patients die cause of other underlying causes too, like lack of medicine, infrastructure, lack of planning etc etc. Apologies for sounding callous but its the way it is. These things come about cause of inefficiency and corruption. What has happened is that the current tragedies have a face on which we can directly heap the blame. The doctor's strike. @alma, you are taking the "human face" angle, just like the press usually does, they highlight one or two cases and run with it wringing all the possible sympathy and rage from the public - but as a side effect you consign the deeper malaise to the back bench. It is hard to obtain empirical evidence on the number of deaths caused by inefficiency, poor planning and corruption, so naturally we get desensitized from it all.
How would you suggest the doctors get what is due to them? Prostrate themselves at the feet of the extremely arrogant and insensitive Anyang' Nyong'o?
Or can you stand and say that kenyan docs are adequately/reasonably compensated? Are government hospitals adequately/reasonably equipped? We are not a basket economy you know.
A government which lost ...(how many hundreds of millions) through fraud and corruption in the clinix fiasco can't take the moral high ground on this. Your government is messing you up, not the doctors.
I do not know an alternative and feasible way the doctors can make this government listen; therefore I can't condemn them. But I can blame the government. Cause I pay taxes,..and the people who manage the taxes do not pay taxes,..they do not think and actually steal those taxes.

@ quicksand,I do not agree with you. The docs should go back t work, and yes ,there is a human face to this. And for them to claim they are not working because of lack of equipments and all is just lame. We all know that most docs run their clinics. And they will say that they do this to supplement the 'poor' pay. so how about they first stop stealing government time ((by extension tax payers money) do what they are supposed to do ,and then come up with a better strategy for the issues to be addressed. Heck, they can even address it with the next government if not this one.....warudi kazi and kwanza that stuff about trainee docs wanting to paid so much bake is absurd.

@famooz ...in reply to your disagreeing with me ..doctors have a side in this too. The lack of facilities is a genuine problem, regardless of its use as a reason for the strike. Where you work you expect a desk, chair, working phone, stationery and computer perhaps? Another thing, not all doctors have clinics. I know a few who were my roommates back at the old UoN,..in the early years it is really hard graft. The doc may be sent to a far flung hospital to work there. It takes time to live, work and save enough to even start a practice. Consequently its only fairly senior doctors who have clinics, those recently graduated, anything from 1 to 7 years since qualifying don't have anything. In any case, I think it is a chicken-egg scenario, as in, would the doctor feel compelled to duck the govt hospital and run a clinic or do hours in a private hospital if they were well paid? You pay people well first, then enforce a performance contract.
You have talked of a 'better strategy', which I have highlighted. What strategy is this? How come they haven't thought of it and made it work before? The minister has treated them contemptuously - even refusing to talk! This is a particularly sore point for me. How do you deal with such an entity? And why shouldn't this govt deal with this problem?
Finally let me pose a question that should provoke some thought. If the KE govt was to source foreign doctors, how much do you think that would cost? Because by firing them, Nyong'o is engaging in dangerous brinkmanship

This is a moral dilemma. You need better pay and working conditions but you shouldn't strike as this will lead to loss of life.

I believe the main reason behind the strike is the pocket but a doctor friend tells me that the facilities issue is a genuine concern. You don't want your work to be watching people die because you lack facilities.

God keep you safe wAZUANS, if you were involved in an accident, the first place they take you is a public hospital.

With all the reading these doctors are supposed to be going through, they show a serious lack of political and moral maturity.

When you go on any strike, you don't antagonise the public!

Now they not only antagonize but cause actual harm and even death of the public.

They may scream as much as they wish and cry if they want to, but once a doctor loses the trust of the people, then he's no doctor.

Many people don't trust doctors in normal times especially when you see your bill. They even have a medical practitioners board that has never let go of a rogue doctor. Heck if you complain, they tell you to sign a form and pay 2k to get it. So that drunk doctor always walks.

Then they come here and pretend they are doing this because they love Kenyans.

Total Upus.

They should have talked to Atwoli and found out how strikes are done.

When they say they will go to other countries, heck what are they waiting for? Wazua is full of posts of Kenyans who go to seek better doctors at cheaper rates in India. They are going there because doctors here are inept or just want you to sell all your property for a "chot" meeting.

Doctors on this forum. I'm very bitter and all I did was see accident victims being left to suffer as the "doctors" walked by.

Imagine the pain of the parents, siblings, kin of the people you are refusing to treat just because Anyang is an ass.

I will repeat. Anyang may be the devil himself, but you doctors are simply the worst human beings this world has ever seen. For the love of your, sorry, my tax money, you will let an old woman die.

@ Laughing out loudly, tell that doc buddy of yours that we are finding it hard, very hard in fact to buy that they are agitating for better facilities. By the way,i like how Drs. make it look like they are the only people who run hospitals. There are a whole lot of paramedics who make hospitals what they are,and they also do not have the best working conditions. So the docs need to read the public mood and do the needful.

About going to work out there, what are they waiting for? Or can we say they need to pass the exams and get practicing licenses in those countries before they can even be called by that title. These guys are so annoying.
