McDreamy,
With 10+ years of experience, your best bet would be to get a job....pronto. And am not talking about the send-my-Cv-shoot-in-the-dark-hope-I-hit-the-target type. You have to sit down and shortlist guys in your network that can get you a gig bila mambo mob. If you get a job that is giving you even 80k take home, grab it with both hands.
AFTER getting the job, you now need to seriously build your side business (as you look for a better job). Starting a business now would have been ideal if you were a single man but family and all the responsibilities that come with it will only strain your start up capital (however frugal you are).
Those who are advising you to change schools, move houses have a point but IMHO that also has a cost to it (deposit for new house, repairs, cost of transport, uniform etc) so you need to sit down and do the math. If you have two cars, sell the more expensive one to maintain. Plough back the proceeds into your start up business. (Ideally You should register the business and open a bank account). Make sure there is "activity" in the account, this will come in handy months from now when you need to borrow money for expansion.
Going forward, you'll notice a few things in these tough times:
*Your fair weather friends will desert you...in droves. Sounds cliche but it happens all the time.
*You'll be shocked at how many things you used to buy but can actually do without
*The value of a shilling will take a whole new meaning
*You think you know yourself, you dont. You'll discover some strengths and also weaknesses you thought never existed in you
*Life will unleash some serious punches on you, better be ready to absorb each of them.
Lastly, to paraphrase a quote from the movie Up in the Air: "Anyone who has ever been someone was once in your exact position (retrenched)".
All the best.

Thanks, if only one can be prepared for such eventualities. Still hanging in there for now

Is there anyone who has managed to keep the (oft advised about) 6-month-operating expenses emergency fund? Found it hard.

Yah it is possible. Doesnt have to be hard cash stashed in some account but can be in unit trusts or t/bill and/or bonds

Welcome to the club.. 6 years and counting, and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!

Took me 6 months tho' for reality to check in.. (Didn't have a family)

My advice: Get rid of that 'slave' mentality. If you can, burn that CV. You don't need anybody to validate how wonderful you are, by making you their slave.. or even worse, make you feel bad by rejecting your applications.

If indeed you feel a job is the way to go, do it with only one foot in. Don't repeat the cycle of feeling bad if you are retrenched again. Let the university divas 'fight' for those jobs, capital for their ventures.

The best purchase you can make now is a pocket note book and a pen. Never ever leave that behind. A time might come when you do.. when it does, know that you are very rich! With your book and pen, start thinking, start learning.. you'll know its working when you start writing! When you need another pocket book, this time with more pages.

You have capital.. what you need is a set of balls and a clear head. I have a feeling you know what to do, your scared self is looking for someone to repeat the same to you, no?

Hi good people, a veteran here incognito. Sad

Yes, I’ve been axed by my employer & here is my story:

1. I was bringing home 150k, wife still working & brings 70k.

2. Got 3 school going kids in private prestigious schools- God knows I can't stand see them go through any change of lifestyle.

3. My mortgage was in process, I've suspended it.

4. We've lost a comprehensive family medical cover.

Mostly, I want to be employed so am updating my CV and sending out to all who cares. I was never prepared for this, am stressed & not sure where or how to start.

With less than 500k in my hands, what are my options? Benefits gone to clear sacco loan I had purchased land (in konza) last year.

I am an IT techie & part time car mechanic.

Let's work with what you have. I'll call it sh500k [even though you say it's less] plus sh70k pm income [I assume this is the net figure]

you also have a plot in Konza (any other assets?)

First things first: draw up a budget that MUST fit in the sh70k. Cut down as much of unnecessary expenditure as possible, but still give yourself some "entertainment" allowance - without it you will die of stress!

Reserve the sh 500k to be taking care of the school fees and medical cover. HOWEVER, if this figure cannot pay for two years of fees, move the kids to a cheaper school.

Now with 3 kids, you can get a decent cover for about sh75k pa in two years, that's 150k.

So can the remaining 350k pay school fees for 2 years?

If the answer is NO; then move the kids to a cheaper school. And have no fears about it - I am sure you will agree with me that kids don't place a lot of VALUE at all on expensive material things!

My kids usually start off in private kindergarten where I pay about 40k per term. Then I transfer them to public school when they reach pre-unit where the fee is about 5k [mainly because of lunch].

I promise you, they don't get depression!

Once you have those basics sorted out, your life will continue as if nothing happened! And now you can begin to think about how to generate additional income.

If in two years you are still not stable; consider selling off that Konza plot.

HOWEVER: don't rush to sell it to star a new business! You will most probably lose your money that way!!!!!

Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

Take a break and relax...

Dont do anything in a rush..you will spring back eventually. What really matters is attitude and experience those are greatest assets when looking for another job...

After you have secure the next job..then you can try out new things...

More monies, more problems...
