Am kinda new to Wazua and am yet to know how to quote remarks in posts.

All the same,kudos to you @Mawinder.You are a true enterpreneur.One who finds a need in the market and commits resources to meet that need.We might not know what you did to earn the contract to,'gravel the roads',but from some posts above you are proving that you do not neccessarily need the technical knowhow to do something,as long as you can get the skill to perform required task.

You do not need to study medicine to invest in hospital business,if you surround yourself with people who have that technical know how.And yes,seeking advice from those in the know as you have done with this thread.

@Mawinder, true entreprenuer!

My two cents 4 u though:
1. To be successful as a contractor, u hav to be very disciplined in terms of cashflow management. This is what messes most of our contractors. in this business, u really hav to keep be very good in supply chain management that is knowing how much and when to order materials so that u'l be able to balance between labour and materials.
Usije ukapewa certificate ya kwanza uende ununue cement ujaze kwa workshop, ama ukanunue Range rover.

Shame on you Most contractors usually have cashflow problems n they find themselves unable to pay for labour bcoz they bot materials with all the money paid ama waliongezea mabibi.

Shame on you Since ur undertaking Govt/cdf/community projects, u should always make sure that ur very keen on the payments. U shud expect to work n not be paid, it always happens. Be careful not invest ur all in a project, these kind of projects can take u back to zero
Contracts = Before u start any job, always make sure u have a well documented contract signed by u and ur client as this will for a basis of ur claims in case of abortive works. Also make sure u read and understand ur contract well especially on the payment clauses, fluctuation clauses, termination clauses, variations, dispute resolution... Very important.

Documentation => As a contractor, ur key weapon is documents.. if an instruction is issued to change scope of work or introducing new work, always make sure that is in writing or else u confirm in writing to the engineer or the architect. All verbal communications with cost implications.. always in writing.. this will come in handy if something goes wrong in future during which time ul have basis for ur claims. Document ur daily activities, update & impact ur programme of works, request for details in time and in writing.... all this will be helpful incase u have not completed the project in the contract time and u need to request for an extension of time as u will be required to give proof. Most clients will charge damages if u dont finish in the agreed time.

Payments - ensure payments are on time as per contract and charge interest for delayed payments.

@muthurimugi ... Wise words.
@Bendi3 according to the Kenya medical and dental practitioners board you require a degree in medicine to open a medical hospital!
@Mawinder ... My apologies if i come out harsh. I only mean to show my disdain for individuals who provide shoddy work in the name of making a profit at all cost in total disregard to the welfare of the person or community. I can see you are already doing that congratulations for not making a change/ difference and for maintaining the status quo. Best of luck as you become the next mugoya or ephraim maina!

Hey, Nov 11th you ask on how to be a contractor.... December 23rd you have started graveling and have another tender for school construction.... and December 30th you are chasing for money....... yawa... yaani these government officials are that fast in approving tenders? And even if they approved on Nov 12th, then boss, I admire your speed of working and i respect your liquidity - seriously. Ama sikuangalia vizuri the year of this post?

Anyboddy that knows what entrepreneurship is about knows quite well that it's about spotting a gap(need) and assembling the relevant resources to ensure that the need is met. Simple and plain......all this talk that he needs to go to school like the rest of the other engineers are people trying to put you down. Especially that one telling you to get back in line coz he's doing engineering and is in his final year. It's almost the same kind of reasoning that goes on in the heads of those in parliament. Google and look at how they define Donald Trump "a business magnet". He has made over three 5 star hotels and he didnt have to study hotel management for that. So people lets not be simple minded. Mawinder i think the best advice is from mosby, but you really dont have to be the manager. You can own the company and let other people(specialists) run it,the way Peter Munga does Equity and the pioneer group of schools.

Wow it been one year since the last post.

@Mawinder I want to congratulate you on your amazing achievements.
From your last post on this thread I noted you are a road engineer. Congratulations!
I also noted you are a used oil sales man obviously from the heavy duty equipment you utilize when leading kenya to vision 2030. Congratulation.

I also came to my attention that you are a sugar sales man. Again that you from helping farmers in western Kenya and else to earn a living. Without hard working Kenyans like you we would be stuck.

I am glad you did not use bribery, connections, people you know, or any of the unscrupulous means other Kenyans (not you obviously) utilize.

Congratulations and thank you for making Wazua and Kenya so much better!

@ Mawinder,
I hope you are still in Kenya and have not escaped to a better or worse place for that matter.
I just wanted to give you some feedback on the state of the roads in Kenya some of which you are proud to have constructed. The roads are still in excellent condition which goes to show the excellent workmanship you and your "entrepreneurial" quack road engineers can do.
I wish you the best of luck in your endevours and may a thousand desert fleas find solace in your but hole. May your balls have lymphaedema.
Wishing you all the best.
Stark.

I don't know why mawinder, a hardworking and enterprising kenyan is being crucified here. As long as he assembles a strong team of engineers and the necessary equipment (he could even hire), then he can do a road. The chairman and owner of Mt. Kenya University was a student at KU just the other day and has managed to assemble a strong team of professors (including his former VC Prof. Eshiwani) and good learning facilities and has turned the institution to be one of the leading universities. They are now out-competing old and established institutions like the UoN when it comes to sourcing for research grants. The owner, Mr. Gicharu did not need to become a Professor first.

As you can see it's all in the mind, dreaming big and working to actualize the dream. It is this enterprising spirit (and not tunaomba serikali nonsense) that has made the US to be the greatest nation on earth. So Mawinder should be encouraged, since he could be the next 'China Wing Yu'.

Dear Mawinder,

My humble apologies for a late reply. I took m ages to travel on our roads before I could get to my computer unfortunately I still use a desktop.

I have nothing against you personally, in fact I don't even know you( Thank you Wazua for anonymity). But from the speed in which you change professions, initially road engineer, used oil salesman, and then a sugar vendor. I can only suspect you are in it to make a quick buck and get out.

You unfortunately epitomize what is ailing our economy. You are not in any business long enough to build it to grow. You just want a contract make your cash and move on. In you greed you will cut whatever cost, bribe whoever needs to be bribed, lie to make get the contract. Once you get the contract you have to then bribe, cut cost, lie and generally do a shoddy job.

You are the filth, theoretically speaking, that is rotting this country from it core.

Nonetheless my little tirade will not get through foggy view of the world and you will probably just lump me as a hater trying to bring you down.

Now to answer your question. I was using probabilities. Most roads built by local contractors don't last and since your username is not lu, wong, or fong you probably are a local contractor and since you built you road in "record" time and got paid in equally "record" time you probably cut corners and did some shoddy ass shit! So you probably hired quacks!
