The prices on the CRSP list are usually obtained from the local dealers e.g. Prices for Toyota are obtained from Toyota Kenya. The prices quoted are usually based on how much the dealer would sell the car if it was brought ex-factory (Toyota Japan) to their local showroom (in Kenya)as brand new. HOWEVER, sometimes the local dealers can be devious (as in the case of Subaru Kenya). If they feel a certain model in their show room is being affected by direct imports from Japan, all they do is advise KRA that the price for that model has gone up, hence very high taxes. Otherwise, how would you explain the price difference of about 1 Million between the Subaru Legacy Sedan (BL5) and the Subaru Legacy Wagon (Bp5). This is the same car in all respects, only that the body shape is different.

@benzino,the question was why different vehicles e.g toyota & mitsubishi with the same or almost the same crsp value & same cc rating have a huge price difference in the kenyan second hand market

It's always rumoured/said that KRA compares the CIF value against the depreciated CRSP value then uses whichever is higher to calculate duty. For your case, CIF =USD 7,000 assume 1$=Kes 84.5, 7 year old car. Your duty will be calculated on the amount of Kshs 591,500 which comes to Kshs 451,019 Customs value 591,500 Import Duty 25% 147,875 Excise Value 739,375 Excise Duty 20% 147,875 VAT Value 887,250 VAT 16% 141,960 Total Taxes 437,710 IDF Fees 13,309 Grand Total 451,019 + Motor Vehicle Registration 12,000 Confirm with a clearing agent as i'm no expert.

The used japanese premio is going for 1.2m, corolla/fielder 900k, lancer 700k, subaru impreza 800k, nissan sylphy 650k, golf 1m, prombox 600k. The reason is simple, duty is not the only factor u must buy the car first and cost depends on how popular a model is thats why a tiny Toyota IST will cost 5000usd to buy alone and a sunny teanna or mazda supremacy cost 3500usd to buy. Shipping cost is based on volumetric size and logistics involved ie if a seller is based in a port city like Kobe or Nagoya will cost less to ship that one who has is based in a mainland town.It true Toyota is sometimes overpriced but so are beatifull women i havent seen anyone give a hot girl 200 for fare
