saw this in todays DN,on the cutting edge..

'..charles was able to withdraw money from James account at the village market,nairobi Equity bank on moi day. luckily he found out james' A/C no. on the slip and deposited all his money on 12th oct,and would wish to apologise to james...'

was just wondering if this has been the case,the numerous complaints in sk( cant recall the threads) could be attributed to this. what if charles wasnt the good type and decided to keep the cash?how many such occurences have occured and gone unreported?

finally,is it that the technology is becoming obsolete or its lack of upgrading and/or maintenance on the part of EB?

Wake up EB!

be happy!

CBK should do a complete audit of the Bank.Some of these failures can be detrimental in the long run if not checked.

the dude returned the cash bcoz he knew he couldn't go far.the bank would soon find out the error and will be on his tail and he will end up being accused of robery.
my point-no one is innocent that's why in kenya,everyone is guilty until proven innocent!!!!

I once openned a salary account with barclays westlands,issued with an account number and later an ATM card. When my salary was paid,went to an ATM machine and found that i had more money than my salary. Withdrew a portion of it. Was later caled by the bank informing me that there was a mix-up between my account and another customers account. ctually the amount i withdrew was from that other persons account not mine. I never got any proper explanation luckily enough I had not wiped the account clean.

This can happen.

Simple logic - an A/c number must be linked to an ATM card. Now let say your a/c number is 0123456 and the person doing the linking the card interchanges the last two digits,you will be able to make the withdrawal from that a/c if it exist.

@palto

Unfortunately,if the bank makes a mistake and credits your account with more money than you expected - say salary,you withdraw all of it and use it,and for some reason,you can be able to explain that you expected more money than your salary e.g you had applied for loan or expected someone to pay you using that account during the same period,and you withdrew not knowing that the bank had made an error,then the bank is the looser.... they cant accuse you of anything. They can only negotiate with you on how you will repay back (mostly at your terms) with no interest rate charged..... thats according to the laws of banking but this is Kenya

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

I think you cannot really go far with the money ... if this does happen ... the guy did a noble thing to return

The 'article' had very limited information. How was he able to withdraw? He says he got the account number from the slip,where did he get the names? My ATM slip does not show my account number or name but some show...where would he have run to,out of country? Because of how much? Most people in EB dont set high ATM limits plus most ATMs have hidden or visible cameras if not on the lobby.
