"The consolidated premium revenue, investment income and commissions earned grew ... However these gains were negatively affected by increase in borrowing costs and inflation-driven operating expenses," the company said in a statement.

I thought insurance companies invest premiums (not borrowings) in the stocks. The cost for placing order is a standard 1.8%, no relation to inflation.

I don't buy it

deposits with financial institutions 1.6b in 2011 to 3.5b, marginal growth in investment income...surely what's wrong with their fund managers? so disappointing

Poor results. The business is also too risk averse. Its retention ratio is one of the lowest in the industry at 60% (meaning its passing on 40% of its premiums to reinsurers). To cap their risk averseness, they have deposited a whooping KES 3.5B in financial institutions (that float can earn far better if they were to stomach more risk). #Bloody bure
