Maybe they were looking for a functional rather than pretty logo eg a colour/box represents one arm of their business etc. Sometimes simple idiot proof logos work.

In other words, it's unlikely for a company like Microsoft to make the goof we're imagining they have.

@dnn, 2012. I tend to agree. But seems like they've always kept it simple.

Check out this link > http://www.dinesh.com/hi...design_and_history.html

Couldn't help but smile when I saw their first logo.

who said that logos have to be scientifically engineered and complex. It is mainly an identity.

You hit the nail on the head. They are just identities, the simpler the easier to remember.

That said the Standard group one in my opinion is kind stup...

Shame on you
U call such creativity stupid? U have no eye for beauty!Sad
Conventional thinkers waste time building shelters when they are unnecessary and then have no shelters when they need them the most. Socionomists do the opposite.

Many people own hp, dell, toshiba, compaq laptops but still go ahead and cover the original logo with an apple sticker why??
Not because apple is complex... its because its simple but with much creativity portrayed in it including the bite with nice colour selection to match their products..
now whats so new in Microsoft's logo that it had to be relaunched? they could hav saved much by using that occasion 2 launch new products rather than four boxes of mismatching colours

Ok. Let's not go overboard here. This microsoft logo could only pass because of practicability (which I'm almost certain was their intent) but it's not creative at all.
But think about it, Microsoft products are functional - they get the work done, they are not aspirational neither are they status symbols like the likes of Apple and hence the practical/functional logo.
