@essyk, i believe if a kid is slow in class, he probably has another gift like music, football, athletics, comedian etc. all these gifts cannot be discovered if the kid is only subjected to one environment.

parents needs to be more engaged in the learning process of their kids and ensure teachers to their work right. we have cases of best schools in the country finishing their syllabusss before mid year and start revisions to exam time.

Tell that to a stressed sweaty kenyan parent struggling to force a professional career out of his son or daughter.
Hatujafika hapo where these other talents are tapped properly and made to look attractive.
Even churchill's mother keeps asking him to get a job. She's convinced that comedy is not a career yet anafaidika.
You and I know that passing the national exam is the hallmark of excellence here.

Eh? i personally think modest education is the basic you need,... we have around soo many unemployed graduates and soo many well-to-do kenyans who have never gone through colle/uni but learned the tricks of making it in life. most graduates are so grilled to only pass exams, so used to mwakenyas/copied exams to apply anything from school to real life.
Every day I get up and look through the Forbes list of the richest people in the World. If I'm not there, I go to work.

can we therefore blame ourselves for this mess?
All of us.

Parents>> Many parents hate it when schools close cz they do not know what to do with raging hormones in the house.
To them, kids out of the house is a relief.
It's therefore not about tutition but avoiding responsibility cz they hate 'parenting'.

Teachers>> They are are just responding to society pressure and filling a void.
-You bring your kid to me for tuitition, what am I supposed to do?

Society>> Passing a national exam is the ultimate goal for any school going kid here.
A school must come tops for it to be recognised. The pressure to excel is overwhelming since failing the national exams is like ticket to failure.
That's why they carry tonnes of books, have hunchbacks early, stay up late etc.

Forget about the other talents cz they are not properly recognised or rewarding. We talk but reality is diff.
Even the local musicians go back to school after being in the limelight because unlike majuu, music here is like seasonal.
Majuu endorsements can keep one going for a while even when not on show.
comedy? i do not know who will replace churchill cz i am yet to see another comedian in kenya.
maybe athletics but again?

Applause Applause Applause nice answer!

Parents have abdicated their role in bringing up their kids. Ati sasa wanakuja nyumbani washinde wakifanya nini?

Some years back, mothers would take leave when schools closed to be with their kids. Now they don't want to be with them or they just care about good grades.

My cousin is in a boys' secondary school in Nyeri. He tells me that save for 1 hour per day for sports during weekdays and 3 hours during weekends, most of the time they're just in class.

Maximum respect for those mothers who take leave to be with their kids over the holiday!

My cousin is in a Nyeri secondary sch. He tells me that they only get 1 hr for sports daily. Most of the time they're in class. Yet the school still wants to have holiday tuition!
