There are several ways you could go about it
Option 1 is you could set up a non profit organization and request people to donate their clothing, appliances, food, really anything that can be of use to someone else. Then you can go on community drives and donate the items, make sure you take alot of pictures and if possible, even contact media outlets to cover your story. This will then help you to attract foreign donors, in this case you will need to use social media and have a well laid out website where the foreign donors can find you and see for themselves the projets that you are involved in. I dont really like this option coz it perpetuates the begging mentality, but hey atleast it will put food on someone's table.
Option 2 is you can volunteer at schools in the slums and in your small way help the upcoming kids not to fall in the same vicious circle that their parents are in. Whatever skills you have, you can guide them and basically just be a mentor.
Option 3 is you can help the idle youth horne their skills, these youth usually have good skills but they are not put to use. Encourage them to use their skills for finacial gain, maybe you can help them market their products. Here once again, social media is your friend. Basically instead of giving them fish, you can teach them how to fish.

I have gone through all the above and thanks alot for the ideas i will sit and see the best option available and see where i can start from with my ka - 5soc.
@Nabwire,my aim is to reach a large number of the needy people and your options are worth thinking about.

For starters theres a kid i have been supporting to pay his primary school fees huko londokwe.

Keep them coming guys and anyone who wishes to join me in this course anaeza jitokelezea.

Hi Wazuans,

How does one get to start up a project in helping the needy in our society.I want to start one.
I dont have much actually most are the times i may remain with only 500 bob at the end of the month but i feel the need to help someone out there. Most are the times i buy bread in the supermarket na nikitoka napea the street boys and am left without,it puts a smile on my face nikiona vile wanaivamia....and they are like asante mathe.

I come from huko londokwe and i have seen kids go to school without breakfast and maybe they will only have one meal for the day.

Is there a way i can start up a project or be involved in one? Any ideas.....

You can't start up a project to help the 'needy' such a category doesn't even exist.

Even if such a category existed, you wouldn't be of help with your money.

Humans thrive on conversation; can you find time to converse with these people you think to be needy? If you can strike an honest conversation with them, then you'll need no advice from anyone.

Or let me put it this way, you want to give, and your right hand, left hand, tycho and the universe knows of it, can love be your motive?

First God bless u for that soul your are paying fees for.
Some time back I embarked on a project ya drug addicts. I will not go into details but it takes passion not even monetary support to keep some things going.
I spent a lot of my own cash to get it off the ground.
So I bought a basketball at Nbo sports house for less than sh.500 and took it to basketball court where the young fellows used to train.I knew some so it wasn't strange.
After play I assigned one person to take care of it.Of course it would tear or get lost but I kept buying more cz I had a goal> to gather them.
That won me support and more youths started coming.
Tukaform kagroup, gave it name, elected officials, got it registered and we started collecting rubbish as an income generating activity.
I paid for banners za advert, renting halls or places to meet, some other small stuff,I just dug deep into my pockets cz mehn I loved those young people and I wanted them to change and stop being idle.I am not talking about millions here.Just a few sacrifices I made like not going to the salon or buying myself anything nice and that money would go to the youths.
If anybody gave me any lil cash hata ya lunch I would rush to buy paint or something else for the group.
Unaona wale watu huweka posters kwa poles? That I did with unga and water. My paros thought I had gone bananas but I had their full support.
You just get into the dirt and do it!

We networked with other youth groups to do estate cleanups, sports tournament etc mpaka in 2007,they wanted me to stand for councillor position cz of the work I was doing.Lmao! crazy.
They were really pushing me plus I had the paros support but woi I was too young and naive for such a tough course.
I wasn't even interested in dirty politics na vile kulikua kumechacha then.
Nilijikuta meetings za lasdap na corridors za city hall looking for our councillor to sponsor one thing or another.A hide and seek game.lol.
I was just on fire to do it and nothing could stop it.
We would engage in sports and if windows got broken I had to pay! lol It was risky, tiring and very sacrificial.
Councillor gave us money for a trophy ya major tournament and sponsored t-shirts.I still have mine with the logo and motto I came up with.smile.
He also promised us a lorry ya collecting garbage but that was just a dream.

We teamed up with some doctors tukaenda medical camps in kibera etc.wacha tu!Laughing out loudly
It's a long story but in the process we also lost a few youths to unfortunate deaths cz of drugs, accidents, thugs, bullets.

The group grew mpaka we lacked manpower to help with rubbish collection. You know we started with our own homes and because it was a neighbourhood we nyakuad all the houses.
One time karibu nipigwe na competitor cz he lost customers.lol.Ungeniona na those huge boys ungedhani am crazy. They were body guards.Laughing out loudly
We had to hire other boys to collect garbage cz work was mob, yetu ikawa tu kupay.
Eventually we opened an office,I gave them part my own furniture and that alone attracted serious people to the office.
Councillor bought them full cleaning gear, wheelbarrows, gloves etc.
Problem now was managing the income because some went back to drinking and partying.
I am no longer there and some got jobs elsewhere but I left a mark in their lives. We still respect each other whenever we meet and they left a mark in me as well.
Nway what am saying is,do not try to reach out to the whole world first.Focus on that one you can manage right now and do a perfect job.
With time they will come in numbers utashtuka.
I was the only female when we started but they respected me so much hadi other girls started joining.
When you prove yourself and people see ur work they will commit bila pressure.
Help comes from those around you cz they can see your work.
And then if you rely so much on people you will be disapointed cz at times they back off due to commitments.
You can't blame them cz it's not their baby but yours.
My advise is,stop dishing out money to kids on the streets cz that is not helping at all.
If you do a background search ul be shocked. Some are able.
Use that money instead to start a worthy project.
Remember in this kenya u just can't gather needy people anyhow.
people want to contribute to a registered cause.
That way u can even go to a councillor for mchango wake.
I am just talking out of exp and trust me I understand your passion.
It can be overwhelming.

By the way we can do something together but I need the passion.
Bila passion ni hard kabisa.Huwesmake.
Hii kazi ya kusaidia the needy can make you cry.
I can count 5 young people who just died.
It saddens me to date.I fear getting broken hearted again.

@essyk, were you really dealing with drug addicts? How did you know they were addicts?

How does creating a self help group help in fighting drug addiction?

Why did you assume that you could not talk the young men into contributing for the balls?

What was your role in the group? What was the effect of your role?

This narrative you've given, is it the mark that was left in your heart? Is it worth mentioning such marks?

You created an issue and built relationships around it. You were making your own movie; you even hired the cast (remember you designing the logo and motto?)

I am being equally brutal to myself; except for these days of 're-orientation' I'd think of myself as a 'social worker'. In fact, my nurture and perhaps nature has been and still is one of giving.

@ Tycho I believe you also go by the name Tokyo in Wazua, and have been campaigning for abortion and atheism, what is your agenda? You just want to water down peoples efforts? @ Essyk, Congrats for your efforts.
@ Specky, I think @ Nabwire's Options 2 & 3 are really good.
Whatever you do just start small & within your means, at times even a smile can make alot of difference in someones life and it's at times not as easy as it may seem. Oh and by the way Charity begins at home like I c u started in Londokwe. Keep it up and you need to be really strong coz some of the people you will be helping will present so much resistance you might be discouraged. However, "Wema hauozi." Whatever good you do will be repaid in a way you least expect.
