Somalis have made a grand entrance into the Kenyan economy - their key strengths of being able to work together and maintain strong networks within their kinsmen all over the world is having a great impact on the economy.

Kenyans should carefully watch and learn from them. Especially in matters of international trade and money transfer Somalis have innovated and started up companies that could easily beat out DHL like Al-Salihiya. Also their ability to work together and network and their increased political representation will have a strong impact.

Hopefully we will continue to see continued action from them and help to grow our economy to greater heights. These are Kenya's new top businessmen.

@ Ufanisi, youre dead right. Just take a cursory look at all mobile dealerships across Nairobi and you'll realize why they are the business Kings. They recently offered a friend of mine with garage on Msa Road Ksh 80M as a going concern. I told him not to sell and they are relentless,i know they will up the stakes.

@ Waria, brace yourself you will be called all unprintable names uder the sky.

The more I reflect on Somalia, the more I feel that nothing better will come out of it in the near future. Every news item that comes from Mogadishu is seemingly identical to a previous news item, say 3 years ago.

My proposal, split Somalia... Give Ethiopia a piece, and that portion that is close to us should be given to Kenya. In this way, some semblence of authority will begin to reign and maybe their dollars can go beyond Nairobi and Garrisa.

Who's supporting me

Somalia itself may end up being a failed state because of the curse of clannism in Somali culture. But I hope that the new educated Somali people can find a way to gradually change the mentality.

If you remember the Somalis who just came from the war experience - they had psychological problems of a quick temper and easy for them to get into a bloody fight etc. But now that they've been here long enough they've recovered from the psychological effects of war and they are as relaxed as most Kenyans and minding their business doing business deals.

In any case Kenya is looking like the beneficiary of a failed Somalia state as Somalis would rather invest in Kenya where they have citizenship rights and political power. So let the economic competition continue - other Kenyans would be wise to up their game and the result will be a rapidly developing economy.

@ anarchy,I had previously proposed that Kenya annex the half the county as the ninth province, with Ethiopia taking the other part. It is in our self interest and national security, and who would stop us anyway any? It would make sense, they use our currency, educational curriculum,we send handas there everyday... But we should never have let them (all foreigners) buy land. The prices in Eastleigh,Lamu,Malindi are now strastopheric because of them. Look at Tz,land prices are still sane.

@ GG and Anarchy

You two remind me of one Donald Kipkorir,a lawyer and regular DN columnist who wrote an article about annexing Somalia by Kenya and Ethiopia. The responses and threats he got from Somalis...too deadly.

It would not work .Seriously. Kenya tumeshindwa na NEP,how will we manage extra 'baggage' of Somalia?

Somalis are an industrious community, second after Kikuyus. Those big buses plying the Githurai 45 route, almost all belong to them. They have finished developing Eastleigh, they have moved to Kariokor, and until recently,Githurai area.

Lyanne,i almost pity your friend. He/she is in for a big ride. They do not give up easily. They will hound him/her,and they are known to use unconventional means to get what they want. Ask Eastleigh natives.

Som's are most welcome to do business in kenya, but out of interest. Their greatest asset seems to be the cheap labour that they get from relatives, you can have 20 of them living comfortably in a 2 bedroomed house. How I don't know.

How do they manage to import goods at prices below others,do they pay taxes?

Where do they get the huge capitals they have? Piracy? Saudi charity to spread Islam?

I am all for Kenya taking over Somalia,my worry is we will have a fight from a few of them 'fighting for their homeland' that will go on forever and we don't want that.

I guess if you can't win with facts, you can always pen bile-laced,xenophobic rants to distract everyone.

@Xtina and others of similar thinking, there is no empirical evidence that the Kikuyu are more more enterprising than other Kenyan communities. They just happen to have been living on or near the white highlands and inherited a lot of infrastucture from the departing colonialist. As some one argued on this site a few weeks ago, outside of Kenya,Luos,Mijikenda etc do as well as their Kikuyu brothers,in business. And in case you doubt this,think...before the mkoloni, the Kikuyu were not involved in trade with any of their neighbours.

@ Xtina,i dont doubt unconventional means, but if push comes to shove,i think the guy will name a huge amount to deter them.

I hate the fact that foreigners are taking over our country. They're all over like a bad rash !

Looks like we need the bill on money laundering, atleast it will stop this invasion !

These chaps are really go-getters. I have worked with them and under them for several years and they are smart guys in business. They work on small margins /high volume concept, are awash with hard cash, borrow from their clansmen on trust with no guarantee (if you default on payment, punishment is by beheading). Lastly when they want something or decide on a venture, they have to get it/do it come-rain-sun!

They seem to be the next big thing in kenya and guys we need to work with them and learn their positive traits to reap the maximum. After all who would have bought my friends plot in Kimathi estate the other day at 35m! The chap went and bought two plots in Kayole and is now about to complete one multi storeyed residential block.

Am not a kiuk apologist/chauvinist but got this from Wikipedia and thought you might be interested.

' Kikuyus are also the most economically active ethnic group in Kenya……. were generally on good terms with the Maasai – their neighbours, with whom they traded extensively. Colonialism, however, disturbed this order. Beginning in the 1880s,the British …………… confiscated land from the Kikuyu, who were confined to a small reserve, unable to cultivate their land

………..Colonization eroded many traditional practices and values… Many Kikuyu have moved …… to the cities and around the world to look for opportunities. They have also moved to other parts of the country and the world due to intermarriage, business opportunities, study, and generally seeking better prospects in life..... '

i have always wonderred why certain communities settled in the dry areas after the 'early migration'

Somali's will take over Kenya based on the following:

They are not greedy - they will look to make 20 bob mark up from 10,000 phones as opposed to the Kenyan business man looking to make 1000 from the same quantity pieces
They pay little or no tax
Pirate money trickling in to them during a recession
They are taking over premium property on the Build Operate and Surrender business plan i.e. take over the run down building in Tom Mboya St build a couple of new floors, subdivide and lease out the premises and collect rent for like the next 10 yrs. During this time the building owner is collecting a pre-agreed rent from them paid a year in advance and after the 10 years he collects the rent from the building tenants.
They do not try to back stub business partners and are operate on cash basis with suppliers, thus a firm favorite of many established businessmen

My only problem with this guys is that they do not respect common decency. If you live near them youll know what I am saying.

Today morning as i was comming to work two of them stopped their cars on opposite sides of the road and started chatting. The road got clogged in a minute and the hooting on both sides didnt bother them.
