True though DTB did very well. The Tier II banks are expanding regionally too but face a lot of competition from local banks as well as large KE banks.

DTB - KE, TZ, UG, BU
NIC - KE, TZ, (new) UG
I&M - KE, TZ, MU, (new) RW

@VituVingiSana, interesting read NIC bid for lower cost of deposit:

•NIC Bank is targeting a 50/50 deposits mix between retail and corporate clients by 2015 from the current 70/30 mix in favour of corporate customers.
•NIC signed an agency agreement with Post Bank in March. Post Bank has 97 branches in its network spread across the country.
•African Alliance estimate that NIC cost of funds could come down to an average of about 3.3 per cent by 2015 (4.4 per cent 2011 versus 1.7 per cent for both KCB and Equity Bank)

I&M Bank is also in an agency agreement with Coop Bank

Why would Co-op Bank [a direct competitor] offer agency services for other banks? I find that odd. I could not find an article or link for this info. Is it reciprocated?

Postbank [by law] cannot offer certain services/products like loans, etc so it makes sense for it to offer other fee generating services like being agents for other banks.

Coop is mainly acting as a deposit taking agent for I&M High Networth Clients in the many areas where I&M doesn’t have a present. Coop gets agency fees. Arrangement is not reciprocatable. Maybe Coop will in future seek a reciprocate from I&M in countries like TZ, MU and RW where Coop doesn't have shops

Interesting arrangement. Seems a smart move by I&M but Co-op might (should) target those same customers! As for other countries, that is tough due to laws that govern cross-border transactions!

One cannot deposit/withdraw "directly" from KCB/I&M/NIC in Tanzania from a Kenyan account. You can use the ATM which charges a fee & a crazy conversion rate.

The arrangement could work if Co-op opens an office/subsidiary in RW where I&M's BCR is #3 thus 'shares' facilities similar to Kenya.

NIC using Postbank is a smarter move coz Postbank branches are widespread with little fear of poaching customers. I like DTB's move to use agents. NIC and I&M should do the same in areas where they have a retail presence or want to grow market share for deposits.
