The Ministry of Education has directed that High School prefects be elected directly by the students and ordered school heads to immediately stop picking the student leaders.

The Acting Permanent Secretary for Education, Prof George Godia said schools should move away from the prefect system of managing students and adopt a council system where students elect their own leaders.

Blanket order for all prefects is not wise.

Elections are not necessarily the best way to choose leaders. So what is required is a mix of elected and appointed prefects.

In my school we used to elect club leaders and sports captains. Then the admin would appoint house and class captains.

We would also elect the overall clubs secretary and overall sports captain. These two would sit in the prefects committee together with house and class captains.

I agree you. We have to be aware that children are growing up under different times. Which is why those who refuse top change with the times will face the adversities of change.

My 1.5 kid refused to use his potty (i had picked from the supermarket myself) he used all excuses of ni ndogo, inanifinya e.t.c. Then one day we go with him to the supermarket and he points at the potty he wanted. It was dearly priced so I showed him another one that looked similar to his choice but was affordable and he agreed. He used it with smiles on that very night.

I will not him 100% liberty but where it makes sense, I always involve him in desision making. I expect him to find it hard to be in a school where an imposed prefect will order him to do outragious things just because the headteacher chose that prefect. This was the case in my school, where during community work, one was supposed to be rotated every month. One prefect dictated that I do a second rotation in washing latrines and I would have none of it but because he was the headteacher's choice, I was made to look like the villain. I stuck my ground and was ready to be sent home. Finally sense prevailed.

Guys this is how students die in school. A students tells the dorm prefect or teacher on duty that s/he is unwell but is put down, with the teachers thinking (wrong use of the word think) or believing the student is prank until situation gets worse and a student if then taken to hospital sometimes too late and it has happened before.
