Monday July 23RD 2012 - Tanzanians livings around the Serengeti Game Reserve have set the area on fire to block the wildebeest migration.

Their decision to block the wildebeest migration has brought many concerns to the Kenyan government. The fires which have so far lasted two weeks have delayed hundreds of wildebeests from Serengeti plains gathered on the Mara River from crossing into Kenya. Hundreds of acres of reserves in the northern Tanzania along the migratory route are still on fire and this has been pushing back the animals.

The Mara Game Reserve usually receives many visitors at these times when the wildebeest migration kicks off and is the annual tourism peak season.

The custodians of the reserve and the Narok County Council have appealed to the Ministry of Tourism and that of Foreign Affairs to talk with the respective ministries in Tanzania to resolve the situation.

Mr. Michael Ole Koikai, the chief warden of the reserve said that tourist who started to camp at the banks of river have been forced to wait because of the delays brought about by the fire.

He claimed that the animals had attempted to cross twice but could not access the river.

“Many tourists are being forced to pay more than they had planned for because they don’t want to leave before experiencing the spectacular 7th wonder of the world,’’ Mr Koikai said.

Stakeholders, who are already afraid of losing revenue, have joined the call for the government to intervene.

The good thing is you cannot block nature. The beasts are already crossing into Kenya. Shindweee!

I think the reason for the fire might be just speculation rather than facts. The fires wuld have a very negative effect on Tanzanians than Kenyans since they will harm their own wildlife.

The way I see it unless the Tanzanians intends to degrade Serengeti to such a level that it does not attract the attention it gets so that they can continue with the 'Super highway project' Burning their side of the migratory route will not stop the migration....it might even encourage the migration even more as animals flee towards Kenya.

...but what a primitive neighbour we have.
......this neighbour that we treat with kid gloves charges our business people fees to cross over.
....co.ke tour vans are not allowed beyond the border yet i see .co.tz tour vans daily on our roads.
.....same neighbour is still trying to put tarmac across serengeti...eish
......all their oranges and potatoes end up in the kenyan market...we don't complain.

.....all the export cargo(fresh produce) goes our through JKIA to the rest of the world.....but the neighbour continues to be a nuisance.....better the one of migingo

I wish we had leaders with balls to retaliate. Just grab TZ by the balls and squeeze them so hard, they will never try to mess with us again! Diplomacy is nice but it has its place. For years we have been the big brother but we always let minions vomit on our shoes. Egypt has single handedly scared off a couple of countries from interfering with the nile waters even though their argument doesn't hold water [pun intended]. They have made it clear to everyone that no matter the facts, touch the water and you've declared war on them. Hapana kuonyesha watu meno saa yote!
