I do not claim to be the holiest christian but for me, prayers do work. For things that i have prayed for, it has worked. And that's all that matters.

However, there is also the believe in the "will of God".... sometimes what we ask for is not what God meant us to have for His own reasons. For someone who does not believe in prayers, they may look at this as an "exit clause" should the prayer not work but I do believe there actually is the "will of God" that is not necessarily the same as our own will.

One needs to pray IN GOD'S WILL - Praying in ignorance is ineffective! e.g. locking yourself in a room and pray for 7 days.... kwani God is a toy you move around as you wish. My view of prayer is that we focus too much on the Supplication part, our prayer should be full of Adoration, Confession and Thanksgiving. Seeking out God's face and not just his hands is very nourishing and effective. Prayer is practical to me in that - since hindsight is 20/20, I can see how I have been guided by God. Miracles don't happen everyday not in biblical times as well - THAT'S WHY THEY ARE CALLED MIRACLES....else they would have been called events. However, not all my prayers have been answered as I wanted/needed them, but hey...I am still here as I choose to believe in the same way Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did when they faced the burning fiery furnace saying "O Nebuchadnezzar, WE HAVE NO NEED TO ANSWER YOU IN THIS MATTER. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. BUT IF NOT, BE IT KNOWN TO YOU, O KING, THAT WE WILL NOT SERVE YOUR GODS OR WORSHIP THE GOLDEN IMAGE THAT YOU HAVE SET UP." - My commitment to God is not based on what he does but WHO HE IS.

Religion is a highly emotive subject for the vast majority of people. We are conditioned not to question its tenets and to accept its doctrine, customs and rituals in totality. Skepticism - and even plain horse sense - is frowned upon and dismissed with statements such as; "The wisdom of man amounts to the foolishness of God".Dissenters are often threatened with dire consequences.

Still, many people get to a point in their lives where doubt lingers. Some groups encourage their members to be studious or even ask God himself for answers. But sometimes the questions are so fundamental that the the doubting person cannot even assume, for instance, that God is available for direct quizzing via prayer. One such question is, does prayer work?

To give my question some context, let me disclose right here and now that I consider myself agnostic to religion. Agnosticism, in summary, is religious fence sitting. It is, to quote my WordWeb dictionary "a religious orientation of doubt; a denial of ultimate knowledge of the existence of God". But I believe the diligent agnostic must endeavor to examine whatever shreds of evidence he finds along the way in order to either reinforce his belief or climb down from the fence and join either the theist or the atheist on the ground.

Many claims of prayers that worked abound across both historical and contemporary life. What is not discussed as much is prayers that didn't work. Even less debated is the question of whether or not prayer work at all.

While scouring the internet for these often under-examined questions, I came across two different articles that seek to investigate reasons people may believe prayer works while indeed it one can't be too sure. Granted they are biased towards the notion that prayer does not work, I nevertheless hope that the great minds here on Wazua can share their own reactions, thoughts and experiences on the matter.

Prayer is a very effective placebo treatment for people in times of crisis, but at the end of the day, everybody reasons their way out of problems on their own.

Jesus walked the earth but he didn't heal everybody
Neither did he raise all that were dead together with lazarus.
Not all that jumped into some healing pool got healed.

He healed according to the will of God.
Same with us.If it's not in God's will to heal you then it don't matter how many days u fast and foam in the mouth.

Of course it's Gods will for us to be well,
But the same bible tells us that some thorns are good for our flesh.
They keep us humbled, plus I believe everything happens for a reason so we cant expect God to be a Yes only God or else he will cease to be God.

The Holy Spirit speaks/guides us in ALL things. He'd be the best, to respond to you, if you desire for Him.
1 Corinthians 2:11-16
1 Corinthians Chapter 12 all the way to Chapter 14
Romans 8:26

That said, I'll tell you my truth, in the hope that it will influence you.

1. Why should we pray?
1 Thesalonians 5:17, luke 18:1 - To obey God's command
Philipians 4:6-7 - Clears your anxiety
Mark 1:35, Book of Luke - We learn from the example of Christ
Isaiah 6:1-9 - To 'know' God better

2. When should we pray?
1 Thesalonians 5:17,Colossians 4:2 - ALL THE TIME

3. Requirements for effective prayer
1 Peter 3:7,Isaiah 59:1-2,Psalms 66:18 - Have right fellowship with God and others
John 15:7 - Obey God's word/Abide in Him
1 Kings 18:41-44 - Perseverance, Persistence
Hebrew 11:6 - Have faith
Hebrews 5:7 - Fervency
John 14:13-14,Psalms 50,Hebrews 11:6 - It would be good for you if you were born again

4. Points to Note
a. Daniel 10:13 - The answer to prayer can be blocked, as was the case with Daniel, his persistence 'unblocked' it
b. Proverbs 28:9,Isaiah 1:15,Psalms 119:21,1 Peter 3:12 - Some prayers and people are REPULSIVE to God. This would probably be your worst misfortune.

And if you choose to be philosophical, here is something to chew on 'Belief is a wise wager. Granted that faith cannot be proved, what harm will come to you if you gamble on its truth and it proves false? If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation, that He exists.' ~ Blaise Pascal

I also in invite you to NPC Valley Road's Doctrinal Class, 11.30 in Minor Hall 2. I have a feeling you might find answers to alot of your questions. I have raised my hand to ask numerous questions myself.

I also have Joyce Meyer's - Power of Simple Prayer (Both as an audio and soft copy book) and would be happy to share.
