The Holy Spirit speaks/guides us in ALL things. He'd be the best, to respond to you, if you desire for Him.

That said, I'll tell you my truth, in the hope that it will influence you.
1. Why should we pray?1 Thesalonians 5:17, luke 18:1 - To obey God's command
Philipians 4:6-7 - Clears your anxiety
Mark 1:35, Book of Luke - We learn from the example of Christ
Isaiah 6:1-9 - To 'know' God better
2. When should we pray?1 Thesalonians 5:17,Colossians 4:2 - ALL THE TIME
3. Requirements for effective prayer 1 Peter 3:7,Isaiah 59:1-2,Psalms 66:18 - Have right fellowship with God and others
John 15:7 - Obey God's word/Abide in Him
1 Kings 18:41-44 - Perseverance, Persistence
Hebrew 11:6 - Have faith
Hebrews 5:7 - Fervency
John 14:13-14,Psalms 50,Hebrews 11:6 - It would be good for you if you were born again
4. Points to Note a. Daniel 10:13 - The answer to prayer can be blocked, as was the case with Daniel, his persistence 'unblocked' it
b. Proverbs 28:9,Isaiah 1:15,Psalms 119:21,1 Peter 3:12 - Some prayers and people are REPULSIVE to God. This would probably be your worst misfortune.
And if you choose to be philosophical, here is something to chew on 'Belief is a wise wager. Granted that faith cannot be proved, what harm will come to you if you gamble on its truth and it proves false? If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation, that He exists.' ~ Blaise Pascal
I also in invite you to NPC Valley Road's Doctrinal Class, 11.30 in Minor Hall 2. I have a feeling you might find answers to alot of your questions. I have raised my hand to ask numerous questions myself.
I also have Joyce Meyer's - Power of Simple Prayer (Both as an audio and soft copy book) and would be happy to share.
