I once witnessed a close case like yours:

A colleague insisted I say hi to her sisters at Doormans along Mama St. We found three girls seated at close to the service counter and she introduced me to the two of them. A fourth girl approaches us and asks that the three girls are under arrest. The third girl distances herself from the first two (sisters to my colleague). I tell off the girl on the issue of arrest (and recall seeing four policemen at the entrance). My colleague gets agitated as the waiters start talking in low tones pointing at our table.

i reckon its easier if we knew what was going on and I asked one waiter (head) who told me that the two sisters had on a previous visit taken water there and did not pay on this occassion a patroon's lap top disappeared. she insisted that the girl could be identified with her scar on her cheek. I asked my colleague and the sisters that "we" hand ourselves in to the policemen outside.

I discovered that there is a police post at International House. There the inspector was very polite and sure tehy had the culprits showing us the complaint lodged by the management of Doormans Coffee. The waiter who made the complaint was invited to state what she knew about the matter and she elaborated that the girl with a scar on her cheek was the one since she could identify her with her huge size and the mark on her cheek. Simple open and shut case or so it seemed to the inspector. All the while the sisters were insisting on their innocence saying that it was the first.

I asked the inspector to let the girls present their case and alibi which could be verified but he seemed very sure. Finally he gave in and the first girl presented her employment card (works for a Government agency KWS), the next (without scar) presents her employer's card (lawyer with a reknown law firm in town). Their national ID were as well presented. The cops were left without words. One corporal said: " hii watu huwa si waizi, kwa majina yao tu, unajuwa wakale si waizi hii town". We were off the hook.
