Barclays UK fined $450M for LIBOR manipulation malpractice.

www.telegraph.co.uk/fina...s-manipulated-Libor.html - Some of the email exchange over the period under investigation.

@toni - there's a time you asked me about swaps rate expectation as USD rallies. Well, since LIBOR as well as EURIBOR rates get manipulated by global banks almost at will, it is hard to tell where swap rates will head.

Oil price is falling but is it necessarily a boost to the economy? Liquidity is key. In a deflationary environment stocks lose value. PPl will have no money to spend even on the cheap oil.

The 9% plus price spike in oil is the story. The rest is noise. Watch out for oil...

Soybean prices jumped to their highest levels since 2008 while U.S. wheat hit its highest price in over a year, tracing corn's rally.

"Corn is such a driver now in terms of market sentiment -- for at least a few weeks if not months -- anything that goes wrong beyond what the market has anticipated would certainly create a turmoil in the market, " Abbassian said.

Food security last grabbed the attention of world leaders after record high food prices in February 2011 contributed to the protests known as the Arab Spring in the Middle East and North Africa last year.

Oops! Seems like global food inflation is back on the cards going forward...

Zimbabwe is walking a very high tight wire with such calls.

Quote:
Plans by a powerful Zimbabwe minister to force foreign-owned banks to turn over majority stakes to locals are "illogical," the head of the country's central bank said, offering hope to the banks but exposing policy rifts that could worry investors.

Empowerment minister Saviour Kasukuwere, a rising star in Mugabe's ZANU-PF, issued a notice last week giving all foreign-owned banks a year to cut their shareholding to 49 percent.

Standard Chartered Bank Plc, Barclays Bank Plc and South Africa's Standard Bank and Nebank all have operations in Zimbabwe and would be affected by the regulation.

The way commodities started rallying 2 weeks back, something is in the offing. Most likely a huge QE is coming soon. Food inflation has never been a good thing...

So China overtook South Africa as the largest producer of Gold back in 2007?
What I see on Gold is bearish surpassing 1527 support. China's output is predicted to fall (lower supply higher prices, right?). @ Hisah says there's alot of Gold accumulation by likes of New Zealand that should prevent an excessive price fall.

As long as asian CBs are buying gold and the world gold council (WGC) report shows that CBs have become net gold buyers since 2010, I don't see how gold price will collapse past $1480. Unless a major GFC comes along or euroland debt bomb blows badly.

Personally I fancy silver than gold. The longer it stays sub $28 the better smile

Very lucky that in EA this was not experienced last year as the EA currencies cratered vs USD and other FX majors.
