Bose is good in speaker technology, they are not anything to write home about on home theatres.

Are you looking for good quality sound (being able to hear the singer inhale) or do you just want the matatu boom boom sound?

For the latter, a 1500 PMPO will suffice, brand name is immaterial. Get a 5 speaker system and ensure they are placed well in the room, use the calibrator which comes with it.

For serious quality, build a system component by component. Bose speakers, Sansui amp, Yahama CD player etc. Painstaking, expensive but worth it if you are a music connoiseur(sp).

PMPO is a completely meaningless quantity with no basis whatsoever in engineering. The PMPO figures quoted on equipment are generated in marketing brainstorming sessions! Not in the engineering design labs.... Something like...

Marketing Officer: "the engineers said this thing can produce 30W. That figure sounds too small. Why don't we write 300W?"

Marketing Manager: "No! 300W looks funny. We should put something more wholesome, say 500W"

Marketing Director: "But that will be lower than what our competitors have and we must be recognised as the leaders in this segment, so I say we put at least 1,000W, or 1,500W"

Artwork Designer (a few weeks later): "The figure 1,500W doesn't fit well on the front panel. The number '5' is too broad for that space. I suggest we either use 1,000W or 2,000W"

Marketing director: "No; we can't reduce the number. Use 2,000W. After all I don't like odd numbers"

And that is how the equipment get's a label screaming "2,000W PMPO"

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Hu! Hu! Hu! Hu! Hu! Hu! Hu! Hu!

Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi!

I can't stop laughing.....

@cardinal; it's all a matter of taste. Go to a shop that has both makes. Be sure to carry a few of your favorite recordings.

Ask the attendant to test them for you. Play a song on one then on the other. Listen carefully and you will be able to hear differences in the quality of output.

Settle on the one that sounds better to your ears.

Forget about looks. Remember that music systems are for listening to not looking at!

And, may I ask why you have settled on these two brands? There are many others, you know!

Sorry but this will never work. What sounds good in the shopping mall will sound completely different in the house (different room size, furnishing etc.). One should note that the home theater systems being pushed through the supermarkets are specifically designed for private "small" dwellings. Think of getting "more" bass when you place the sub-woofer in a corner as opposed to the middle of the room. Same thing here.

What I do agree with is the looks. I've seen more than enough people forking out untold sums for those home theater systems (I'm looking at you Sony) lit up like Christmas trees. They may look good but in the dark trying to watch a movie and you can't dim the amp lights? Yuck!

How does one do research? You hold all factors constant; then change one and observe the effect...

Thus if two systems are tested in the same showroom (i.e., all factors are held constant), there is a good chance that the one that sound better will also sound better when you get home...

But if you test a Sony in one shop and then an LG in another shop; the factors are no longer constant and the results cannot be reliable...

Guys guys, we do a lot of 'research' yet we have an online resource that is so rich! I love reading reviews of particular items that interest me. I start by viewing what various manufacturers have then I drill it down and ready reviews from as many sources as possible. People actually highlight very good aspects both in the -ve and +ve on the product and I can then choose where there is consistency of reporting and now look around that issue raised by many. If many report -ve, chances are it's worth a review.

In Audio, there are different categories - Stereos, Home theatres - personal/custom/specialist equipment. Know what you want. If you are really keen, you can get sufficient info online to make a move. If you need a sound engineer, you need to be investing over 0.5M on the system for the charges to start making sense - and that means you better make use of the system to recoup your value. If you spend over 0.3M on it and listen to it less than 5 hours a week, you are wasting money - just buy the 1500 PMPO (in my former school, this meant Pocket Money Pay Out)
