Why should I pray for the state of Israel as a Christian?

I do not dispute that Israel holds a special place in history and is a beneficiary of blessings inherited from their forefathers but why should a Christian pray for Israel and forget to pray for suffering people in their country or Christians facing affliction in Nigeria and Egypt?

They definitely are not saints. Even the Bible points out crimes that were committed by individuals and also by the Nation of Israel.

I'm of late seeing some obsession with Israel. Christians(esp. Evangelicals) seeking to appear like they love the Jews more than the Jews love themselves.

People believing that if they make that pilgrimage to places where Jesus walked and lived they will become better Christians. We may end losing the very essence of our faith if we become too engrossed in Jewish issues.

If a Christian is to 'love your neighbour as yourself', seriously, who wouldn't you pray for?

Holy biz.
It's just like the business of hawking Holy water from Israel, making pilgrimages, seeing where sijui who was buried etc. What for!
If people slept, ate and shook hands with Jesus himself yet they were as evil as the devil himself, how will a tour to where he was crucified expected make me holier?
We only excite our outer senses but the inner man remains as he was before we left Kenya.
I keep saying, you want to go on tour just go! But dont use God's name to do business with gullible people.
The cross ought to be the message not the tour.

@Lolest, the Bible commands Christians to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. I believe it's the high time we did pray for them to avert the forthcoming war between them and Iran. If it happens it will affect the entire world.

Maybe I should edit the title to Should a Christian feel obligated to pray for Israel?

My concern is what @essyk points out in her reply. People even taking time to fast for another nation because they believe that praying for them will bring blessings!

Interesting that such will often forget to pray for Christians in Nigeria or from other denominations in the same country!!

@india, please quote the verses, I will appreciate.

If you are a Christian and diligently study your Bible the one thing you will realise is that God expressely blessed Israel and since God doesnt change,I believe the blessings still stand evidenced by the trials the nation has faced, fighting 7 wars in a 50 something year period isnt a joke they might be great tactically but there is most certain a bigger force behind them (and not the US)...When you pray you pray for everyone to receive God's blessings since all of us are equal in His eyes.

Praying for Israel, like John Hagee and family media are deceiving hundreds of thousands, is denying Jesus Christ and the cross.

This mindset:

a) Maintains that jews only are special people above all the rest denying the promise that all are one in Christ and there is neither Jew nor Greek etc.

b) Denies that those in Christ are Abrahams seed and heirs according to the promise. All the promises they are claiming to the exclusion of all humanity belong to those who are Christs.

Indeed, this mindset

c) Teaches that there will be rebuilt temple in Jerusalem in which sacrifices will be offered meaning Christs sacrifice and blood is nothing.

d) Is pushing for Iran to be attacked, a blood thirsty, war mongering mindset.

Essyk, rofl, can you tell us having prayed in keshas for Israel if you got blessings as was promised. As India tells us which Jerusalem this is. The one that is coming or this other one....
