What is happiness?

As subjective as it is, what makes one happy? Happy people do not kill themselves or do they?

Even if one has those bipolar issues, if he is happy at that point, can he kill himself?

If you feel you have people you can truly rely on. People who get you. People who will never judge you no matter what and will always have you back - and make time for you, chances are you will have a very happy life! A parent should be one such person.

I've seen very happy broke people, very sad wealthy people, very sad poor people and very happy wealthy people.

@Much Know - Don't be like those pastor's who concentrate on one verse ignoring the rest of the chapter so that the can explain it out of context. The same article you are quoting goes on to say the following:

"Many feel they are in the wrong body and some are confused about their sexual orientation. They are not comfortable discussing these issues with their family because they are afraid of rejection. That conflict pushes them to consider suicide," he explains.

......

Mr Gacheru explains that one of the reasons young people attempt suicide is to draw the attention of parents, who may be too busy to notice that their children have chronic emotional problems that they do not know how to handle by themselves.

.........

"Many children are used to having their way and have a wrong perception about how things work in the real world. Such children tend to have a low tolerance for frustration, and facing reality that things cannot always go the way they want can be overwhelming for a child who is used to having his own way,"

@maich those articles are talking of children, this guy was 24yrs for heavens sake. i cannot blame a big man's suicide on his parents, it's stretching it a little.

To be honest I've just been wondering what could have been disturbing that young man. Was it girls? High expectations? Drugs? Just what would make the son of the man who controls the country's budget commit while the kids of the poor are going strong?

I live in 26th floor apartment overlooking a beautiful park, I have a job and I don't worry about my bills, I have a nice car, health insurance, dental, life and retirement plan, to someone else, I seem to have it all. However, I sleep less than 5 hrs a day almost everyday, 60% of the time I struggle to fall a sleep, I could be in bed for hours with absolutely no sleep.Over the weekends I can look down my apartment and see seemingly happy guys, obviously broke but playing basketball and having fun like nothing matters, sometime I wish I could just live freely but I can't. The point is happiness is not a function of wealth, poor people are as happy as rich people, infact poor people could possibly be happier than rich people, imagine if you didn't go to school and you lived in forest, you wouldn't even know how good life is suppose to be, you wouldn't even care about cars, nice cloths, status, traffic, career, homework, you would just be landing and eating!

Obviously, I can read people's status from the comment, to this kid wealth wasn't a factor in his happiness, he had the wealth so he didn't consider wealth as a privilage, but to someone else who is not wealthy, they would think wealth could make him happier no!

@Drunkard, well put. It's lonely at the top.

Ill be very honest to you hence will not use a friend of mine analogy. If pressure/stress builds up in you without being ventilatted for sometime and pple around you dont notice be sure you will go kaput.Life becomes useless, you start fearing life itself in short you become paranoid if that is the right word.If pple close to you or you dont fight it yourself by doing the right thing as in seeing a psyschiatrit brother youll do it impulsively without noticing.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

From the same article

Quote:
Mr John Gacheru, a psychotherapist at the Amani Counselling and Training Centre, says most young college and university students who seek his help after an attempted suicide suffer an identity crisis.

as architect has indicated earlier, until you deal with such a case! The mind is not that straight forward, i cannot wish you go through dealing with a psychiatric case, but as far as am concerned the folks have nothing to do with it (as much as i agree good parenting CAN help model people well), ask the "parents" at S.O.S or Starehe old boy's, or some orphanages why suicides are not the rage there, let me leave it at that.

Parents burying sons and daughters is not good.
Ought to be the other way round.
"The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.
