And what are the equivalent Kiswahili translation?
Independence(Uhuru kwa Kiswahili) is controlling your affairs separately from another state and gaining international recognition of your status as a separate state. After this, you can apply membership to international bodies and even participate in games as a separate country. You will often have a head of government from your country when you become independent.
Republic(Kis. Jamhuri) is merely having a head of state from your country performing the largely ceremonial roles that the office has.
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Jamaica are independent of Britain but are not republics. They have a head of government(Prime Minister) but the British Monarch is their head of state. The monarch assigns an official from UK to perform the roles required of her to those countries.
Thus between June 1963 when we got madaraka to Dec 1964 when we became a republic, Kenyatta was our Prime Minister not President.
I wish I could clearly explain 'internal self rule'(Kiswahili- Madaraka) that easily.
