It definitely is as the katiba recognises it.

How different is this day from Dec 12? What is the relevance of Madaraka Day? What do we celebrate on this day?

On this date 1st-June we became a Republic (Dola Huru)while on December 12th we became independent.

CAVEAT: I don't know the difference between a republic and an Independent state! Sad

We will contemplate all the sacrifices made by our grandparents on this day.

We will do this on our sofas at home.

In December, we will contemplate them some more.

No, brother Impunity.

We had this discussion last year(check provided link)

According to my recollection of Kenyan history:

June 1 1963-Kenya gained internal self rule(madaraka). All that this means is that Kenyatta became Prime Minister.

Dec 12 1963-Kenya gained independence from UK. The instruments of independence were handed over then. Thus this is our Independence/Uhuru Day.

Dec 12 1964-Kenya became a republic with Jomo automatically becoming first President. This is our Republic(Jamhuri) day.

Thus Madaraka ilikuwa ya Kenyatta peke yake!

Nevertheless, I welcome the 'free' day.smile

And what are the equivalent Kiswahili translation?

Independence(Uhuru kwa Kiswahili) is controlling your affairs separately from another state and gaining international recognition of your status as a separate state. After this, you can apply membership to international bodies and even participate in games as a separate country. You will often have a head of government from your country when you become independent.

Republic(Kis. Jamhuri) is merely having a head of state from your country performing the largely ceremonial roles that the office has.

Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Jamaica are independent of Britain but are not republics. They have a head of government(Prime Minister) but the British Monarch is their head of state. The monarch assigns an official from UK to perform the roles required of her to those countries.

Thus between June 1963 when we got madaraka to Dec 1964 when we became a republic, Kenyatta was our Prime Minister not President.

I wish I could clearly explain 'internal self rule'(Kiswahili- Madaraka) that easily.

Do you think we would have been in a better place today, as a country, if we had taken the Jamaican route, rather than the republic one?

According to Google translate:

Madaraka - Power
Jamhuri - Republic
Uhuru - Independence

@Rorest, Is it possible to be a republic and not becoming Independence from any power?

So all those countries in the world without presidents as head of state nan never be referred to as Republics?

Republic: a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

Meaning that yes, those countries without presidents can never be called republic...in my opinion.
