Aish bado??
I have given this equation to few people kazini and they are as lost as wazuans.

Can we therefore assume that both answers are correct depending on what you understand by Brackets off?

The Off doesnt mean anything, in other countries the O is substituted for E(eg. Canada and US) to mean Exponentiation. Remember this is a Mnemonic that is used to help students remember the order of operation infact in the US PEDMAS is used instead of the UK's BODMAS.

Like seriously? it's beginning to sound like some molecular concept.
I believed I was correct with 9 but the more I read the more I became convinced niko wrong.

So,if Kenyans know Bodmas and US/Canada know Bedmas

What does wazua know? 9 or 1?

@maichblack is right here. You divide first after removing the brackets. Brackets mean you solve whatever is inside them INDEPENDENTLY, then the math rules apply as usual.

If you don't believe it just enter =6/2*(1+2)in your spreadsheet and see what the answer will be.

@king, there is no multiplication sign before the bracket, the answer should be one, harrydre is right and Maichmweusi wrong!!!!

Kwani what grade did you score in pre-babe class?

Can't believe its occupying my mind all the time
By a simple vote can we see who is in favour of 9 and those saying 1?

You cannot multiply before removing what is in the brackets first.

6/2(1+2)= 6/2(3) Pause there!
We must get rid of brackets b4 division and how d u get rid of brackets? you multiply 2x3 to get 6.
later you divide.6/6=1.smile

Let us write down what you have posted...

Brackets first and then remove the brackets by multiplying hence BODMAS now becomes:

BOMDAS

The O in BODMAS contrary to what your teacher told you does not mean take brackets off but refers to exponents (powers and roots). Otherwise we have double multiplication resulting in:

BMDMAS

Laughing out loudly

My unit teacher taught me that the "O" in BODMAS stands for "of" and off meant "multiplication"d'oh!

Now back to class:

6/2(1*2)
= 3(1+2)
= (3*1)+(3*2)
= 3+6
= 9 smile

Was just letting you know that the Ofor {of} is a mathematical operation for squares or roots. Sorry if landed badly, the answer is 9 remember a whole number is always over one so in this case its
6/2(1+2)- if you work the brackets first ur answer is 3/1 from there the equation is 6/2*3/1
