Now which of the two is true?Using the so called BODMAS.

Second one is correct. That is why it is H.K.E.A.A. approved. You divide first then multiply.

When programming though, both multiplication and division are at the same hierarchy level. If both appear in the same equation, you start with the one on the right.

I beg to differ. If you apply the rule of BODMAS, the first one is correct. You always solve the Brackets first.

My friend, ulipata nini hesabu. You work out the brackets, get 3 and stop there! You don't multiply by 2 because 2 is OUTSIDE the brackets! Next step is dividing 6 by 2; you get 3. You then multiply that 3 with the 3 you got earlier to give you 9!

Followed that?

Brackets, OF (thats why we multiply before the division)...so @MaichBlack you are wrong. The answer is ONE.
The only reason why the two cals have different values for the answer field is because they are in different computation modes.

I scored a clean A my friend. still 6/2(3), you have to solve the ( ) first. OF which is basically Orders per the BODMAS. That gives 6/6 which is 1. Do some further research.

I concur with this.

Look at it this way

6/2(1+2)
=6/2(3)
=6/6
=1

Imagine the (3) is like an algebraic number, say x.

so 6/2(x) = 6/2x = 6/6 = 1. You multiply the 2 and x together first before dividing, simply because when the 2 is right next to the brackets it takes priority.

6/2*(1+2) would be 9 because in this case the division and multiplication are on the same level but we execute them from left to right, same case with addition and subtraction (left to right)

ai i dont get it, i thought you are supposed to divide first before you multiply?

@maichblack is right here. You divide first after removing the brackets. Brackets mean you solve whatever is inside them INDEPENDENTLY, then the math rules apply as usual.

If you don't believe it just enter =6/2*(1+2)in your spreadsheet and see what the answer will be.
When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.
