Give us an example of anyone who has managed to buy paris from his bedroom? Not even steve jobs, after working from his garage he had to face the real world. Dont let those stories captivate you. Even Bill gates had to drop out and partner with IBM to make it.

@murchr
regarding availability of office space in an orderly manner, see the effects of Annual Land Value tax here
http://www.wazua.co.ke/f...amp;m=274904#post274904

With this in play, anyone with vacant land around the city will be forced to develop or sell it hence the issue of high rents and lack of space will be reduced.

The economy will be so vibrant due to developments and affordable ofice spaces will be many.

Wikipedia says Kenya is on the way to implementing this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_value_tax

Quote:
Other countries

Land value taxation is currently at some stage of being introduced in Kenya,[72][73] Namibia and other countries. China's Real Rights Law contains fundamental provisions founded on a land value taxation analysis.[74]

@murchr..if this idle land tax is implemented properly, high rents and lack of quality office space will be a thing of the past.
Most vacant land around Nairobi will be developed or sold to developers.

I do not blame the ICT Board for the Konza project. Ndemo and Kukubo look like people with genuine good intentions based on their speeches in the media.

They sought the services of Worldbank to offer them advise on Konza and its impact to the Kenyan economy.

They are merely following this advisory to the letter.

They should let Worldbank answer critic's questions regarding Konza's impact on the economy instead of taking the flak on their behalf.

It is upto them as PAID beuracrats to protect the interests of this country. Not to push the agendas of the world bank or whoever is financing them.

If you are in ICT there is nothing more painful than seeing your idea being used somewhere else. We know these companies prey on the uninformed, yet we bring them here to party!

Who came up with the idea to give Google the lock and Keys to Gov't data? Then foolishly went ahead and called it Kenyan Open Data. There is nothing open about Google. Their goal is to control all information in the world and someone in gov't just gave them the keys.

Yes I blame them.

@alma..when you se Ndemo and Kukubo appear in the media and talk about leaving a legacy, they truly think they will leave a legacy.

The signs of an evil character are in avoiding the mdeia. These guys are very active on twitter.

I dont think any person can present an unviable project with such confidence .

My conclusion is that someone else who is not active in the media/public eyes has convinced them beyond any reasonable doubt that the project is a success and cant be a white elephant.

@murchr..
please expound on your question above.
Its basically taxing vacant land as if there is full development on it.

Owners of vacant land will feel the pain of paying tax as if the land is developed so they will either develop or sell to a developer.

This will open up and increase ammount of rentable space in Nairobi.

@murchr, the core of the Land Value tax is taxing idle land as if there is full development on it, hence ensuring land owners develop or sell land.

I have not yet sen the proposals in Kenyan idle land tax.
This prevents hoarding of land as is happening at Konza whereby govt has bought 5000acres.
Konza city will have to pay tax on the vacant several thousands of acres as if they are all developed.

This pic explains it better-Read the wordings on the billboard carefully-

By the way, I wish to apologise for stating the wrong company in open data, its not Google its Socrata.

Mind you I want Konza to work. You only need to know me to know how I hate Nairobi. But if its IT we are talking about, then we are barking up the wrong tree.

I promise you this, if in the next 8 months of their term they could stop going to Stanford university and instead take a trip to Paypal, they would have changed this country forever.

In this trip they should not take Larry Madowo. They should go with the owners of IPay and those Akira chix and pretend they are students.

We are living in dangerous times when we can't see that the global war is being fought over data.

The chinese want to chase Google and Facebook, we wish to build them mansions here. The russians are quickly becoming the best programmers and hackers, we are holding another Nokia conference.

This war is on. And data is what they are after. We are about to give them all of it hook line and sinker as they praise us for having an "technology city".

Sorry, I ain't buying it.

Let us educate our masses Now! Our only advantage is in our minds. We give them that and all of us will be working in Konza as sweepers and bodyguards and calling ourselves developed.

Adios.

No the internet is not theirs. And once you are as paranoid as I am, they will only have the information you want them to have. In the case of the Kenya gov't, they gave them ALL the information.

@murchr..
if the internet is theirs, how comes china can afford to kick out YouTube and replace it with this below?

http://v.youku.com

http://translate.google....ranslate?langpair=zh-TW|en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youku.com%2F

If they owned the internet, youkou could have been de-internetised ASAP.

We need to open our eyes as Kenyans and realize these Western organizations are not all-powerful as they seem.

If Worldbank, with all its money can utilize my idea without paying me a cent for it, this means they are basically a facade and are not as powerful as they make us believe.

If i can come up with an ICT concept that makes money and Worldbank utilises it to make money without considering me, the originator, this means that i have the upper edge in the long run if supported by Govt to make use of the ICT solution.
Ditto to all ICT startups in Kenya.

@Murchr.. nobody owns the internet

Probably you can go to their offices and try it out before dismissing it from how it looks. It can be used in place of the Amazon e-readers being used in some schools in kilgoris by some local publishers for their pilot project.
Borrowing of Ideas in the technology world can help you survive or lead you to the next breakthrough.
Steve Jobs stole ideas for the first GUI from Xerox labs bill gates used fonts developed by Apple etc..
The chinese have for decades came up with products similar to other high end products can we...aren't they doing better than???

If this is the kinda attitude we have towards those trying to come up with anything then we are seriously headed no where...

It is not about performance. What I am asking is where these guys in put is. To be specific, what value have they added on the tablet to make them such a shining light of Kenyan IT worth supporting? Have they develop some proprietary software or hardware or have they made the tablet behave in a different way from the other android tablets?

What they have done as far as I can tell is to identify some Asian (probably Chinese) company to manufacture a generic tablet for them and merely have their brand fixed to it. FYI there are several websites where you can get such companies to manufacture just about any electronic device you want and brand it whichever way you want.

Unless you show me the value I have asked for, these guys are no different from say a Wazuan who decides to buy charcoal in bulk, package , brand and sell it to the mass market through Nakumatt -probably good business thinking but no IT mind there.

With respect, if you believe that 'Steve Jobs stole ideas for the first GUI from Xerox labs' then you probably never interrogate the information you receive much.

All the same your comparing the tablet situation (where I am yet to discern any IT value addition) with Apple and Gates (where there were value added to the initial ideas) misses the whole point of my comments in this matter.

Have checked out the tablet and there is not much there to differentiate it from other generic android tablets. So what value or technology have these guys added to the tablet to make it worth our support? It honestly seem like the guys just contracted a Chinese manufacture to brand generic android tablets with their 'Kaboo' brand. If that is the future of Kenyan IT then we are f***ed.

Most of these guys in Govt ICT have PhDs so its not the lack of cognitive ability.

Our heroes should be the Oduoris in the 10x10s in Kayole who come up with marvelous ICT products, not the Microsofts.

You are very gracious my friend. I'm not.

This information age will not come back. Once we sell all our Mpesa's to these so called "loving" multinationals, you can forget about these vision 2030's

You forget one thing, knowledge and skill never gets depleted what we are calling the "in thing" today will be a dinosaur tomorrow and to stay relevant you have to network and have your antennas high to know what will be "in" tomorrow, therefore no serious developer can rush to "buy paris" on striking it big the first time.

When the japs copied the first Television from the americans they added nothing just made it cheaper, today they have the best tv's. Gates just made what was Jobs technological innovation cheaper and available hence the cold war between them.

@Elder its simple you want to evaluate the additional value being offered by the tablet have a look then probably you will have enough info to positively critic them.
Regarding the GUI if you know why Steve Jobs often used the phrase "Great artist copy and great artists steal and that Xerox were copier heads who had no idea what computers could do ..." then you would have an idea about the origins of the GUI and how it ended on the Lisa Mac and what he did to the Xerox PARC and Xerox Alto ideas.
Apple allowed Xerox to invest $1M in them in return for jobs to visit their labs and have a demo on what they were working on. Their 100,000 shares were worth more than 17M the following year but that can not be compared to what Jobs earned from using their GUI idea.
