Lets look at your facebook example how many people started it or even Apple and the rest with large campuses these started in dorm rooms and garages.

Most of the IT companies are no longer waiting for graduates with 100% capacity they have stepped up by training new entrant so stop thinking nothing is happening in terms of building capacity.

@jamplu, based on your comments, I have confidence to tell you the following...

You do not know or understand what you are talking about, period!

I hope the people behind this Konza City are not of the same mindset.

Same case with ICT. We have to scale up to be considered an IT hub. Not 300 people at iHub. They can't fill a floor at facebook hq.

You can't scale up with buildings, they have finite space. You can scale up with the mind, it is infinite. Lets invest in the minds of Kenyans. All of them not those blessed enough to pay a monthly fee at iHub.

Let's get serious here.

First of all, do you realise that the project is to take 18 years? Secondly, do you believe that the technology we have today will be relevant in 2014? Believe me what we call advanced today will be a dinosaur and hence the need for more seriousness.

Dont you think that if the govt committed itself more into this then we would have an enabling environment? We dont need another I-hub in Kisumu, let that man interested in software dev board a bus and get the exposure at konza. In the US they leave their comfort zones and fly to california for business and knowledge exposure.

Those who think that Konza is about buildings are so wrong. What will be in those buildings is what counts.

On your comment about Nrb being the among the best planned citys....was it planned to hold the population that it does today?

So you want a man to board a bus from Kisumu to Konza to develop an app? Kweli konza ni mama yake?

You do realize that we are now in 2012, the need for someone with a serious app to go to California is non-existent. You have heard of companies such Jet Blue who's sales force was all at home?

You have heard of things like skype, online conferences, you know, things that don't force you to go to Konza to do a damn thing.

If you don't know it yet, there are already some developers in Kenya and ict guys who don't know what iHub or the ICT board is all about. Simply because they are busy with clients from other countries.

If you don't know them, then Google. It's a tool that lets you get information about other people without having to go to Konza.

I say again, lets be serious as a country. Very serious.

None of the Konza apologists have explained in English where the ICT thingiiii is in this Konza. Why?

Because they know there is nothing. They want to ride on the coatails of iHub which is another NGO. It is not a Kenyan invention, it is an NGO.

Exactly what is the ICT Board doing to develop this country as an ICT Giant.

Of course apart from holding competitions which their cronies win, going for foreign trips and now imagining a city of IT yet they themselves can't use Excel?

@Murchr
All over the world, cities grow when they offer the lowest cost of production to inhabitants.
Konza mode does not offer the lowest cost of production.

For an ICT investor to purchase a basic item e.g memory chip, NITI,MITSUMI and other wholesalers in Westlands will still offer the lowest cost. He will still have to travel from Konza or Kisumu to Westlands.

For the ICT guy to travel from Kisumu to Konza, the cost of living will be too high-probably a room will go for kes 2k a night. In Nairobi, the guy will choose whether to spend 300bob at Ngara or 3K at CBD.

In the US, Silicon valley reduces cost of production since it already has the talent in-house hence increasing efficiency. High property value will be recouped by high exposure to talent.

Mark Zuckerberg recently bought a house for a whooping 560m in Silicon Valley.

http://www.bloomberg.com...llion-dollar-homes.html

Quote:
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 27, bought a house this year in Palo Alto, said Larry Yu, a company spokesman. He declined to disclose details. Zuckerberg paid $7 million [KES 560 MILLION]for a 5,000-square-foot (465-square-meter), seven-bedroom home in a “leafy and affluent” neighborhood,

Konza will need to create the talent by nurturing universities for several years, at least 10, for it to offer exposure that can recoup high Real estate costs.

Please don't get pissed. I was using what in English is termed as a figure of speech.

I've been asking since these two topics on Konza started what the ICT element is. No one wants to answer. Why? Even in the Jeff shows, what we are being told is that it will be a technology city.

Please explain to all of us possible or unlikely investors what the technology part of the technology city means. We have got the city part. We have seen that the gov't wants to be in direct competition with Kenyan property developers.

Now you really need to sell the tech part.

What is this silicon valley you are talking about? Maybe when we know where you are coming from we shall forget the property angle.

What will a Kenyan who wishes to develop an aeroplane get from Konza that he won't get from Zimmerman? What will a guy who's only interested in apps get from Konza? What will an angel investor get from Konza he can't get from hanging around the corridors of iHub.

Please sell the tech part. That is what some of us are waiting for. Now if you can't sell your own Kenyan tech guys, exactly who is your target market?

By the way, I don't need to do research on Silicon valley, I lived there.

If you follow Zuckerbergs story, after seeing the potential of facebook....where did he go? And for why did he do that. Leave the residences alone if one feels like they should live in a 5000 square foot hse, they can always do it elsewhere even if it means boarding a chopper to get there.

Why are we waiting for 10 years, yet there are already extremely talented Kenyans coming from JKUAT who are living hand to mouth trying to get the attention of all and sundry about their abilities?

@murchr..

The idea of a well planned ICT City is good if executed well.
The problem is Govt buying land with tax payer money then reselling to citizens.
Other methods such as zoning the land work better.
E.G Silicon valley. Its a whole region which am sure US Govt has zoned for that purpose.

@alma has lived there so he can clarify for us whether silicon valley has a fence like Konza has or whether US Govt resells land there.

Mark Zuckerberg has moved there solely coz he will gain from the pool of talent.

Creating such a pool of talent is not done by buying 5000 acres, fencing it then reselling to people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley
Quote:

Silicon Valley refers to the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California in the United States. The region is home to many of the world's largest technology corporations.

Stanford was the main attraction and creator of the pool of talent.

What is the main attraction and creator of the pool of talent at Konza?

The Kenyan who will want to develop an aircraft will go to the steel plant in Athi river, the one where the nyayo car was being developed (I dont know the name of the place) but the one who will want to develop a comp software will want to liase with other companies that can facilitate his idea. That is the networking that they are aiming to achieve in Konza. BTW, if u watched the next big thing on NTV, there was a guy who believes that he can create a software that can land a plane. He was looking for an investor to take it to the next level. What konza will offer is a consolidation of these investors in one area.

@alma has lived there so he can clarify for us whether silicon valley has a fence like Konza has or whether US Govt resells land there.

I can clarify that there is no fence. Just some thousands of very sharp young kids doing some IT stuff that I don't understand.

on the issue of gov't buying land from A to sell to B is an issue that the supreme court only got around to in the Bush years. Some states are fighting that law tooth and nail.

The issue was that small community businesses were being replaced by big businesses. Eg Walmart would come to Kiambu and within a year all the small businesses would be killed. In the end everyone in Kiambu would work at walmart.

The supreme court upheld the Bush law of eminent domain and now people are crying foul after seeing how gov't can use it.

Quote:
The Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005) affirmed the authority of New London, Connecticut, to take non-blighted private property by eminent domain, and then transfer it for a dollar a year to a private developer solely for the purpose of increasing municipal revenues. This 5-4 decision received heavy press coverage and inspired a public outcry that eminent domain powers were too broad. In reaction to Kelo, several states enacted or are considering state legislation that would further define and restrict the power of eminent domain. The Supreme Courts of Illinois, Michigan (County of Wayne v. Hathcock (2004)), Ohio (Norwood, Ohio v. Horney (2006)), Oklahoma, and South Carolina have recently ruled to disallow such takings under their state constitutions.

I beg of you, however sweet Konza sounds, don't let gov't be able to buy your land and resell it to someone else. Especially in a country like Kenya where we know that people even grab forests.

@ murchr, Mark Zuckerberg bought a house in Palo Alto, a city that is 15,200acres in size.

San Jose, also in Silicon Valley, has a population of 7.5 million people. The land size is 115,000 acres.

In a nut shell, Silicon Valley is not 5,000 acres. Its hundreds of thousands of acres.

@alma can estimate for us the size in terms of a region in Nairobi. In my estimation, this should be like the area from JKIA all the way to Konza.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose,_California

Quote:
Geography
Downtown San Jose, looking over the Tech Museum and Plaza de César Chávez park.
Looking west over northern San Jose (downtown is at far left) and other parts of Silicon Valley. See an up-to-the-minute view of San Jose from the Mount Hamilton web camera

San Jose is located at 37°20′07″N 121°53′31″W.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 180.0 square miles (466 km2), of which 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²; 1.91%) is water.

I doubt if these guys know what Silicon Valley is and how big it is.

I'm 100% sure that they are going for Palo Alto not Silicon Valley Model. So I will help them out.

The idea they have is not based on Silicon Valley, it is based on Palo Alto. The incubator city.

that's the one that is 16,000 acres. Not 5k acres. So let's not hoodwink Kenyans.

On these 16000 acres with the biggest ICT firms in the world, here's the breakdown in terms of employment.

and is home to more than 7,000 businesses employing more than 98,000 people I was one of them.

So again this 200k people being employed at Konza still beats me. Considering that Palo Alto is the home of some of the following companies.

Amazon.com's A9.com
AOL Inc.
Aricent
Better Place
CPI International
Hewlett-Packard
IDEO
Mashable
Mopay
Nanosys[26]
Ning
PAIX
Palantir Technologies

please I say again. When you think BIG, be realistic and know your short comings then fix those shortcomings.

Let me fill u in on the history of silicon valley...Since the early twentieth century, Silicon Valley has been home to an electronics industry. The industry began through experimentation and innovation in the fields of radio, television, and military electronics. America is planned in such a way that each state has some specialization eg Detroit Michigan is where their auto industry is located while Newyork is the financial city. What can we call Nrb?

PS. Refer to your map and confirm palo Alto, you will find out that its just a place in silicon valley.

That's very fresh considering that Silicon Valley is not a state. And there was nothing like ICT in the whole world before the 80's. So surely in 1884 when it started under Stanford, they couldn't have planned for an ICT city could they?

Understanding history is also as important as reading it.

The epicentre of Silicon Valley, Stanford Uni, has 1800 acres according to Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford,_California

Geography

Stanford is located at 37°25′21″N 122°9′55″W (37.422590, -122.165413)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2), of which, 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2) of it is land and 0.045 square miles (0.12 km2) of it (1.64%) is water.

Its my belief that this epicentre for the last 100 years, nurtured talent that resulted into the surrounding hundreds of thousands of acres to develop into the current Silicon Valley.

In the Konza situation for example, if Ministry of Info supported a public uni which would have bought land -say 1000 acres using its own funds=200,000x1000ac=200mil.

The KES 1B from treasury then could have been used to lay ICT infrastructure and fund ICT entrepreneurship.

This could have eventually led to the Silicon Valley effect.

So far we know 18 unis local and international want to set base in Konza is it vital that something should be done?

Nairobi was planned with Upper Hill as Govt Ministry HQs, CBD as finance region,

Westlands as high cost[wazungu] residence,

Parklands as middle cost[Indian] residence and

Eastlands,Muthurwa ,Gikomba as low cost[blacks] residence.

Industrial area still remains as industrial base.

That's very fresh considering that Silicon Valley is not a state. And there was nothing like ICT in the whole world before the 80's. So surely in 1884 when it started under Stanford, they couldn't have planned for an ICT city could they?

Understanding history is also as important as reading it.

Silicon valley is in Carlifornia ICT is partly electronics infact its 85% if not 90% electronics even that shopkeepers calculator u might have used today is a computer my friend. Apps are a very small part of IT
