Lets look at your facebook example how many people started it or even Apple and the rest with large campuses these started in dorm rooms and garages.
Most of the IT companies are no longer waiting for graduates with 100% capacity they have stepped up by training new entrant so stop thinking nothing is happening in terms of building capacity.
@jamplu, based on your comments, I have confidence to tell you the following... You do not know or understand what you are talking about, period! I hope the people behind this Konza City are not of the same mindset.

Same case with ICT. We have to scale up to be considered an IT hub. Not 300 people at iHub. They can't fill a floor at facebook hq.
You can't scale up with buildings, they have finite space. You can scale up with the mind, it is infinite. Lets invest in the minds of Kenyans. All of them not those blessed enough to pay a monthly fee at iHub.
Let's get serious here. First of all, do you realise that the project is to take 18 years? Secondly, do you believe that the technology we have today will be relevant in 2014? Believe me what we call advanced today will be a dinosaur and hence the need for more seriousness. Dont you think that if the govt committed itself more into this then we would have an enabling environment? We dont need another I-hub in Kisumu, let that man interested in software dev board a bus and get the exposure at konza. In the US they leave their comfort zones and fly to california for business and knowledge exposure. Those who think that Konza is about buildings are so wrong. What will be in those buildings is what counts. On your comment about Nrb being the among the best planned citys....was it planned to hold the population that it does today? Konza mode does not offer the lowest cost of production. For an ICT investor to purchase a basic item e.g memory chip, NITI,MITSUMI and other wholesalers in Westlands will still offer the lowest cost. He will still have to travel from Konza or Kisumu to Westlands. For the ICT guy to travel from Kisumu to Konza, the cost of living will be too high-probably a room will go for kes 2k a night. In Nairobi, the guy will choose whether to spend 300bob at Ngara or 3K at CBD. In the US, Silicon valley reduces cost of production since it already has the talent in-house hence increasing efficiency. High property value will be recouped by high exposure to talent. murchr Please don't get pissed. I was using what in English is termed as a figure of speech. I've been asking since these two topics on Konza started what the ICT element is. No one wants to answer. Why? Even in the Jeff shows, what we are being told is that it will be a technology city. Please explain to all of us possible or unlikely investors what the technology part of the technology city means. We have got the city part. We have seen that the gov't wants to be in direct competition with Kenyan property developers. Now you really need to sell the tech part. What is this silicon valley you are talking about? Maybe when we know where you are coming from we shall forget the property angle. What will a Kenyan who wishes to develop an aeroplane get from Konza that he won't get from Zimmerman? What will a guy who's only interested in apps get from Konza? What will an angel investor get from Konza he can't get from hanging around the corridors of iHub. Please sell the tech part. That is what some of us are waiting for. Now if you can't sell your own Kenyan tech guys, exactly who is your target market? By the way, I don't need to do research on Silicon valley, I lived there. Leave the residences alone if one feels like they should live in a 5000 square foot hse, they can always do it elsewhere even if it means boarding a chopper to get there. Why are we waiting for 10 years, yet there are already extremely talented Kenyans coming from JKUAT who are living hand to mouth trying to get the attention of all and sundry about their abilities? The idea of a well planned ICT City is good if executed well. The problem is Govt buying land with tax payer money then reselling to citizens. Other methods such as zoning the land work better. E.G Silicon valley. Its a whole region which am sure US Govt has zoned for that purpose. @alma has lived there so he can clarify for us whether silicon valley has a fence like Konza has or whether US Govt resells land there. Mark Zuckerberg has moved there solely coz he will gain from the pool of talent. By the way, I don't need to do research on Silicon valley, I lived there. The Kenyan who will want to develop an aircraft will go to the steel plant in Athi river, the one where the nyayo car was being developed (I dont know the name of the place) but the one who will want to develop a comp software will want to liase with other companies that can facilitate his idea. That is the networking that they are aiming to achieve in Konza. BTW, if u watched the next big thing on NTV, there was a guy who believes that he can create a software that can land a plane.
