On the kwaheri board leaving thika municipality, there is the tagline that Thika is "the Birmingham of Kenya".

Really? How unoriginal and unpatriotic.

I hope other locations will not follow suit like, "Turkana the Kirkuk of Kenya".

In the 70s, Thika was the industrial capital of Kenya. It had more industries than Nairobi! So people started calling it the Birmingham (industrial capital of England at the time) of Kenya... and it stuck.

Today, I think it should change that to the Cambridge of Kenya since it has more than its fair share of universities (JKUAT, Mt Kenya, are all Gretsa headquartered in this town). Just like Cambridge UK and Cambridge USA

All these years we've been fighting to decolonize the mind but for every one step forward, we make 2 backwards. Whatever the reasons behind that sign does not warrant copying other countries (especially UK's) city names Sad
