NHIF needs to employ doctors and nurses. Sponsor needy medical students and build hospitals. This is one of those parastatals that lack a development minded vision. They collect billions, the claims are in the millions yet there is nothing much to show for it's excess.

It will be interesting to see how they differentiate the self employed from the unemployed.

The way I understand it was that the 320/- got you a bed rebate of 1,700/- per day for inpatient. Using the law of proportions the proposed 2,000/- should get you a rebate of 10,625/- only it doesn't.

Why you ask?

Well in theory the new rates will allow NHIF to offer outpatient cover as well. Great you say... the issue is that the where, how and who has not been communicated to the public.

So it looks like the policy is let's get the money first then we'll figure out how to offer the outpatient cover later.

P.S. if I'm self-employed but make less than 12K per month, what amount am I supposed to remit?

NHIF would need to change its terms of reference to achieve what you've suggested above. The issues you are raising are as a result of the bodies charged with these responsibilities failing to fulfil their mandates.

NHIF should work within the existing framework so that I can obtain outpatient facilities at both public and private hospital using my NHIF card similar to the cards issued by private HMOs.

Do we as a country have adequate infrastructure to accommodate this initiative... probably not; but we must start somewhere.

This is a tax. We cannot ask them what they do with the money just like government tax. Insurance companies operate under IRB and NHIF should be made to operate under same rules and regulated by IRB to ensure service delivery

how will nhif determine one is unemployed?
i know many self employed people who make way more than 100k monthly. they will pay just 500 shs, same as someone earning between 12-15k monthly

NHIF is not doing enough to make this new plan acceptable among Kenyans. They should market it to make it more palatable among Kenyans.

Should some other concession for taxpayers be given? Maybe tax relief?

what will NHIF Cover all sicknesses? What is the Limit for the cover?
will we have to access all hospitals in kenya?
