I've used paypal but not here. My account is till active and has a few coins in it. Use it for ebaying and amazoning but unfortunately have to send to an address in the UK and pick them up when I go there or when someone is coming!!
In Kenya when i tried the bank(BBK) vehemently refused to honour online transactions claiming they were not safe and i had to call and tell them to honour transactions then they wanted letters and a barage of shit to indemnify an online transaction which was just bullshit!
I believe there are Kenyan equivalents about to take off and im hopeful our online transactions might soon be picking up!!

There was a long thread on paypal in stockskenya and you should ask the admins who have been sleeping for the past few weeks to hook you up with the thread.

avoid paypal like the plague if you are in Kenya. Use it with care if you are in other countries.

My suggestion is use merchant accounts instead.

Hi Alma,I use PayPal with a Coop Cash card whose account I only credit when I need to buy something. Why do you think its so unsafe?Maybe we could all learn from your views.

@alma I've used paypal for years with no problem. It protects one from fraud and insures purchases.

@ja-kom I did complain loudly to paypal for not opening up in Kenya, but our banking laws and culture makes it hard for them to operate in Kenya, for instance they require ACH/CHP monetary transfers which are not available, and they're not set up to use mpesa. Its life in a third world country...

@bird_man

why pay a middle man when your coop card is good enough?

If you are using paypal as a buyer, I see no problem with using it. I think in this case the topic starter was talking about you accepting payment as a seller.

If you are a seller never go against any of paypal terms. You can only receive money if you are in their member countries. Kenya is not one of them.

second

If you are a seller, avoid opening your paypal account from different countries. I know a lot of people say that they open their accounts with their friends in the us or uk and still login to their accounts from Kenya. This is playing with fire.

This will get your account banned the moment your account is flagged . I have gone through that. A lot of people have gone through that. Once they put a hold on your account, you will not get your cash in 180 days.

Google " paypal locked my account". It happens even with tourists coming to kenya then logging into their accounts. In some instances, even logging into your account from another IP can get it banned. Getting it back means a lot of work and trust me, its not fun.

Those are the facts.

That is why I say use it with care. Many businesses have suffered through paypal. My advice is if you have to use it to receive money, use 2checkout. when you recieve any money in your account, transfer it immediately.

for a user, then paypal is ok. Actually it's very good.

Shame on you Shame on you Currently PayPal accounts in Kenya are only able to send payments. They are not eligible to receive fundsShame on you Shame on you .

But i use it all the time because i consider it VERY safe once your account is VERIFIED. For instance the seller never ever sees the credit card details. The only way to do it is that the *mother account* which receives and pays is verified and is registered in another country. To withdraw money whilst in Kenya i use option *withdraw money to my bank card(credit card)* otherwise i can use the default option which is *withdraw funds to my bank account*

NB.. Kenyan banks do not allow you to withdraw money with your credit card for a stupid reason which is they have not installed systems which recognise a PIN.... they still have to swipe a card and let you sign and this is the reason why paypal will keep on staying out.

@Alma,thanks for the clarification.I think PayPal is very safe for a BUYER...but even having said that....my PayPal account right now is sort of blocked because I violated some terms somewhere.....so as Alma says, don't play with fire, stick to the rules! The guys have no real email address and calling to the US is not amusing.

You can withdraw from PayPal successfully in Kenya using ePay-Kenya. More on that in this link:

http://likechapaa.com/20...w-from-paypal-in-kenya/

You can also use the Payoneer US virtual account. More on the same link.

I have used both and can bear witness that they all work perfectly.
