Crucial payment hub severs ties with Tehran

Financial group vital for oil transactions makes unprecedented move to disconnect Iranian banks blacklisted by EU.

Iranian leadership say their nuclear programme is for peaceful means [EPA]

Iran has been largely cut off from global commerce after the company that handles worldwide financial transactions said it was severing ties with many Iranian banks to back European Union sanctions against Tehran.

The action on Thursday by the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) aims to enforce EU sanctions discouraging Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

It will go a long way toward isolating Iran financially.

SWIFT is a banking hub crucial to oil, financial transactions and other trades and global financial transactions are impossible to conduct without using it.

I am just wondering, are there no international banks in Iran like barclays and the like.

On a lighter note, I think this is an opportunity to export M-besa there smile

Once Uncle Sam blacklists you nobody will be willing to touch you with a foot long pole. This is US plus EU

This is why persia is looking at barter trade with russia, china, japan & india. Gold & food & direct rubles, yuans, yens & rupees swaps for oil...

I can also see Somalis are also seeing red due to the Hawala system ban. How much money have they invested in KE real estate as investment...

I hope the US & EUR also realize that other countries are watching - which only hasten the rise of the Yuan & Rupee and as global reserve currencies and agressive pursuit of Look East and BRIC policies. How myopic their thinking in this day & age & state of global economics Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly shmucks!!

All banks in Iran are local banks, there are no international or regional banks in Iran....
On M-pesa they have their own they call it Jiring though its not that used due to easy, cheap and convenient availability of banking services across the country...
