OK everyone,

I am a new poster here but have been following the conversations @ wazua for quite a while. I have also been keeping close track the evolution of our media's coverage of Maranda. I have noticed a deep skepticism of the recent KCSE results from long time posters that I happen to share.

Before I elaborate, I will provide some background and then, to maintain the narrative flow, provide the supporting links only at the end of my post.

OK.

First, on Feb 29, we are told that Maranda had a performance index of 11.2871. See, for example, DN,among others: "Maranda obtained a mean grade of A- with a performance index of 11.2872....."

Second, on the Mar 2 edition of DN, without any explanation, we are told that Maranda had an index of 11.2: "Maranda Boys High school in Nyanza topped the charts despite registering 261 candidates. It had a mean of 11.2.

Third, on Mar 1 @ 22:30 (please take note of the time), DN posted, again with no explanation, that Maranda's index is 11.057: "Maranda High stormed its way to the top with a mean grade of 11.057."

Now, you might say that these are just typos, but from the moment I had full access of Maranda's result, I calculated that their mean score is actually 11.05747. Using the handle Mzalendo Mshupavu, I made the following comment, the full link of which you can find below, on March 1 @ 15:15:"But if, as seems reasonable to me, an A is assigned 12 points, and A- 11 and so on, and you have the student profile as given by the DN and then generously add the Bs that I did, well, I am sorry folks, but you end up with an index of 11.05747 for Maranda. The math doesn’t lie."

I believe Maranda's real performance index is 11.057 and not 11.2871. Alliance's is (pending confirmation) 11.2570 and Alliance Girl's 11.1455. So as things stand, Maranda is clearly not the highest performing school and had the index been calculated accurately, we would have had a different ranking.

All publicly available information points to the following ranking:

1) Alliance High School
2) Alliance Girls High School
3) Maranda High School
4) Starehe Boys Center
5) Mangu High School

Even so, props to Maranda. Being at least the 4th best school 2 years running is no easy feat.

For starters can you give a breakdown of the grades for Alliance?

bkismat,

Yours is a valid point. Anticipating it, I wrote in my post: I believe Maranda's real performance index is 11.057 and not 11.2871. Alliance's is (pending confirmation) 11.2570 and Alliance Girl's 11.1455.

Still, the weight of historical evidence suggests the ranking I gave being correct. The top school has always produced the most top 100 candidates. Alliance 2010 and 2009 classes had 29 and 19. The schools were ranked last year, but not the year before even though it was straightforward to deduce AHS had the best results etc etc

Maranda managed just 2, which I suspect would be by far the lowest ever managed by a legitimate # 1 school.

But at the very least, can we agree that Maranda's index, without question, is 11.057 and not 11.287?
