What is war-dialling and how can you hack an ATM with that?

For what war dialling is read this- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_dialing

ATMs typically connect directly to their host or ATM Controller via either ADSL or dial-up modem over a telephone line or directly via a leased line.

You would need to pray that the ATM is on dial up modem then you could war dial for ATMs connected to telephone modems, and identify them by the cash machine's proprietary protocol. Once you have a target assuming there is any ATM with it's remote monitoring feature on, you could bypass authorization and install unauthorised programs via the internet by exploiting an authentication bypass vulnerability. And that's if the ATM machine has the vulnerability in the first place or the flaw hasn't been fixed- this can allow unauthorised programs to be run in it and overwrite existing firmware. After that you would have to know what to do to get it to give you cash.

Anyway, there is this issue of when you are in distress at the ATM, you enter your password in reverse and a distress call is sent to the relevant authorities...

That's mostly just a hoax....you cannot do that on all or most of the ATMs.
