Warren Buffet says that, the favourite holding period is forever. Are there companies on NSE that one can trust and devot their investment to for life? What are some of these companies and what makes them viable for life long investment.

@Kyukkamba, for sure you are right on that.....though there are those companies that are unique to the locals and these may not face external or international competition and the local competition is far from nearing it..... again these are not seasonal or technology based which could suffer from fashion or technology change......demand is always there at good or bad times people will always use their products.... NONE! The longest safe holding should NEVER exceed 5 years. Always do you 'maths' on 5 year cycles. This is KENYA.

Putting 'KENYAN' factor's to a constant, then ALL qualify except NEVEREADY! with their crop of administrators.

Now you are thinking well. Here are the companies I would buy for my old age.

Jubilee- Aga Khan also never sells his controlling state and I trust his business acumen.

KenGen- We will forever need power. Running Dams is not easy matter for private compe.

KCB- Owns real estate assets which in the future can be used as collateral if not converted into prime office blocks.

KK- Well diversified around East and Southern Africa.

Eaagads- The land they sit on.

ScanGroup- A company that is usually on an acquisition spree becomes a monopoly. Add to the fact that it is going regional and etc. Adverts are here with us for a very long time.

Wisdom to detect when share prices hit rock bottom.
When interest on bonds keep going up, you know the bear run is on high street. When interest on bonds start leveling, the bear has met the bull and they have hit rock bottom. When the interest rates on bonds start coming down, the bull has overpowered the bear and you better be riding the bull.

EABL-Consistent profit growth.Even during high inflation times people still drink beer.

The standard benchmark to gauge whether a stock could be held for life is that it should return 10 tens its value (including splits and dividends) cumulatively in 10 years.

Only 4 counters achieved this for the period 2001 - 2011. They are :-

(i) KCB
(ii) EABL
(iii) JUB
(iv) KPLC

Looking forward 2012 - 2022, KCB and EABL still qualify to be relied on. I will add KENOL in the list to make 3 counters.

I'd pick something in construction & allied - cement companies in particular - as county headquarters/governer mansions/konza city/gated communities et all will have to be constructed.

People drink even more when they are suffering from effects of inflation.

Add to the list: Limuru Tea.
Their tea business is doing poorly compared to WTK or Kapchorua but they sit on land whose current market value approximates Ksh 9,000 - 10,000 per share!!! In 10 years time, that share value (x 22 current share price) will have been realised.
