Hey people,those who've been doing small time shopping abroad,how does it go when you jet back.....at what point does the government insist on inspecting your bags to determine if you should pay some taxes????....just how much shopping can you get away with????

assuming you are entering through jkia... there are guidelines on what you can bring in duty free... eg 1litre of booze,some parfum,etc; but gifts is a definate no-no...so avoid baby clothes,etc...electronics and other stuff can pass off as used/yours as long as they are unwrapped...otherwise for larger shipments you may as well use the walalo's

@half-empty

the clothes(baby/spouse stuff) can pass. the only thing you need to do is remove them from the packaging and pack them as your own clothes without the wrappings.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

Women can get away easily. After you buy a big suitaces of clothes remove all wraping and shopping tags,fold the clothes into the suitcase and not too neatly at that. then just before you close the suitcase put your panties and under garments on top. Preferably used ones. Normally the KRA guys avoid too much rummaging when they see too many of those. I was amazed at the number of clothes my sis brought in. However these were for her own use and gifts.

If youre bringing to sell pay your taxes.

Customs are not allowed to tax you anything if the goods you have are Kshs 10,000 and below that is law,however not many people do that and who determines the value heck you could have gotten your clothes from the many charity shops in Europe or US where they are rediculously cheap..

What i have done time and again,once your luggage passes through the x-ray scanners at the bag,if your bags are of 'interest' they will chalk-mark your bag with an X or line,once you get your bags identify if your bag has it and place it in the trolley where it's not conspicous and voila you pass thro..sounds rediculous but trust me it works...all the best.

Success is not measured by what you accomplish,but by the opposition you have encountered and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against the overwhelming odds'

JKIA is probably the worse airport I have ever passed through. The customs guys are like hungry starving dogs,waiting for anything,its really pathetic!!

Just be difficult and confident,and theyll leave you alone...else they are greedy corrupt crooks,who want cash in the car park,you can spot them operating there!
