I went to pay my yearly business license earlier on today at Nairobi city hall, just to be told by the a lady on counter8, that my records show that i have not been paying for my license for the last 3 years.
Yet i have been paying my dues in their offices yearly as required and i have been collecting my licenses yearly from their offices as usual.
Then she tells me that i will have to be pay penalties accumulated for years i "defaulted"... getting to ask how i can be helped' she goes ahead to show me other records which also read NIL payment..and tells me that i only way out is to pay in full for the years i dint pay plus penalties for defaulting!
I thought of going to the police or the Kenya anti-corruption but Nyani ni wale wale!
d'oh!
If i showed you where i live, you would think that i was hiding.

Just do your bit in reporting the matter wherever...even if u feel no action will be taken...esp. since you have evidence of previous payments made

How do they account for the license you have been holding for the past year since you cannot get one legally unless you paid for it and to renew you have to come with it. Also don't you keep receipts for your business? Its one of the most basic principles of accounting, this should have shown proof of payment.
Normally when dealing with city hall I tend to photocopy the receipts one for the office and one "home" copy for good measure.smile

Please report them.... but before you do... follow up with the Council licensing office and see how far it takes you. Front-office clerks usually don't know what they are talking about. So please take the matter further up to a proper licensing officer.

Even if you think the amount in question is "small", remember that if you don't follow-up, they will keep repeating this for other businesses and then some one will make a tidy sum running to hundreds of millions....
